Vice-President Radhakrishnan Calls for Positive Media Discourse

RR Team, January 17, 2026January 18, 2026

Dehradun, January 17: Vice-President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan on Friday called upon the media to actively promote positive and development-oriented narratives, saying constructive journalism plays a crucial role in inspiring youth and strengthening democracy.

The Vice-President was speaking after inaugurating the Jagran Forum in Dehradun, organised to mark 25 years since the formation of Uttarakhand. Addressing a distinguished gathering, he described the State as a symbol of sacrifice, resilience and service to the nation, and congratulated its people on completing a quarter-century of statehood.

Recalling the journey of Uttarakhand’s creation, Shri Radhakrishnan said the formation of the hill State was a democratic response to long-standing public aspirations. He noted that the process reaffirmed the strength of India’s federal structure and participatory democracy.

Sharing a personal recollection, the Vice-President said he had voted in favour of the Uttarakhand Statehood Bill while serving as a Member of Parliament. The decision, he said, reflected Parliament’s sensitivity towards regional aspirations and the unique challenges faced by hill communities.

Devbhoomi’s Spiritual and Ecological Significance

Highlighting the deep spiritual roots of Uttarakhand, the Vice-President referred to the State as Devbhoomi, holding a revered place in India’s civilisational consciousness. Drawing from Vedic and Puranic traditions, he said Uttarakhand represents the timeless ideals of Satyam, Shivam and Sundaram.

He underlined that the State’s importance goes beyond spirituality, pointing to its immense ecological value. Glaciers, rivers and forests originating in Uttarakhand, he said, sustain life and livelihoods far beyond the State’s borders, making environmental preservation a national responsibility.

Stressing the balance between development and ecology, Shri Radhakrishnan praised Uttarakhand’s emphasis on green growth. He lauded initiatives in solar energy and noted the State’s pioneering effort to conceptualise Gross Environmental Product alongside Gross Domestic Product.

Infrastructure Growth and Strategic Role

The Vice-President said Uttarakhand has witnessed rapid infrastructure development under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami. Significant progress in road, rail, air and digital connectivity has strengthened integration and improved access to remote areas.

Referring to national security, he highlighted the State’s longstanding contribution to the Indian Armed Forces. A large number of officers and soldiers from Uttarakhand, he said, have served the nation with distinction and bravery.

Emphasising the strategic importance of border regions, Shri Radhakrishnan said border villages should not be viewed as isolated outposts. Echoing the Prime Minister’s vision, he described them as the “first villages of India”, representing strength, heritage and resilience.

Vision for Viksit Bharat 2047

Looking ahead to India’s goal of becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047, the Vice-President said Uttarakhand holds unique potential. He identified renewable energy, organic agriculture, horticulture, AYUSH, eco-tourism, startups and skill development as key sectors for future growth.

He said the State’s traditional knowledge systems, combined with innovation and entrepreneurship, can create sustainable livelihoods while preserving cultural heritage.

Such inclusive development, he added, would ensure that progress reaches both urban centres and remote hill villages.

Media’s Responsibility in Democracy

Describing the media as the fourth pillar of democracy, Shri Radhakrishnan said it serves as a vital bridge between citizens and those in power. Responsible journalism, he said, enhances transparency, accountability and informed public discourse.

Appreciating Dainik Jagran for highlighting positive stories, the Vice-President urged media organisations to regularly dedicate space to development-focused news. He suggested that at least two pages be reserved for constructive reporting.

He emphasised that positive narratives can motivate young citizens, encouraging them to contribute actively to nation-building rather than feeling disillusioned by negativity.

The event was attended by Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Gurmit Singh, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, senior representatives of Dainik Jagran including Managing Editor Tarun Gupta and Director Sunil Gupta, along with other dignitaries.

Concluding his address, the Vice-President expressed confidence that the Jagran Forum would generate meaningful ideas and discussions to support Uttarakhand’s continued progress.
