A Tribute to a Statesman
Describing the occasion as both an honour and an emotional moment, the Vice-President said the publication is more than a visual archive. He termed it a heartfelt tribute to Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose life continues to inspire generations.
The book, authored by Shri Vijay Goel, captures rare photographs, personal anecdotes and archival material that document Vajpayee’s remarkable journey in public life. The Vice-President said such works help preserve history not as distant memory, but as living inspiration.

Personal Recollections of Atal Ji

Recalling his association with Shri Vajpayee, the Vice-President shared that he had the privilege of serving as a Member of the 12th and 13th Lok Sabha during Vajpayee’s tenure as Prime Minister. He noted that observing Vajpayee’s leadership from close quarters offered invaluable lessons in governance and statesmanship.
He also reminisced about organising a public meeting addressed by Vajpayee in Coimbatore in 1974, describing the experience as transformative during his early years in public life. The event, he said, strengthened his faith in democratic dialogue and mass connect.
Journey from Parliamentarian to Prime Minister
Highlighting Vajpayee’s political journey, the Vice-President said it reflected the strength and resilience of Indian democracy. Rising from a parliamentarian known for his eloquence to becoming Prime Minister, Vajpayee earned admiration across party lines.
Even during periods of intense political contestation, he maintained dignity and integrity, demonstrating that political disagreement need not descend into hostility. His inclusive approach and calm leadership style set benchmarks in parliamentary conduct.
Landmark Decisions and Visionary Leadership
The Vice-President referred to key milestones during Vajpayee’s tenure, including the Pokhran nuclear tests and transformative infrastructure initiatives such as the Delhi Metro. These decisions, he said, showcased a blend of strategic strength and developmental vision.
He observed that Vajpayee consistently upheld dialogue, democracy and development as guiding principles. According to him, Vajpayee proved that firmness in national security and sensitivity in governance can coexist harmoniously.
Poet, Visionary, Parliamentarian
Describing Vajpayee as a poet at heart and a parliamentarian par excellence, the Vice-President said his speeches resonated beyond the walls of Parliament. His oratory combined conviction with compassion, making him a rare leader who could disagree without being disagreeable.
The Vice-President urged the nation, particularly the youth, to carry forward Vajpayee’s ideals of unity, social harmony and democratic engagement. He said these values remain relevant in navigating contemporary challenges.
Distinguished Guests in Attendance
The ceremony witnessed the presence of several eminent personalities, including the Governor of Bihar, Shri Arif Mohammed Khan; the Governor of Haryana, Prof. Ashim Kumar Ghosh; the Governor of Rajasthan, Shri Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde; former Union Minister Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi; and Shri Vijay Goel, who curated the book.
The gathering reflected the cross-party respect Vajpayee commanded throughout his life. The event concluded with a collective resolve to uphold the democratic ideals he championed.
