VP: Erosion of Meaningful Dialogue and Authentic Expression Contributes to Today’s Institutional Challenges

RR Team, December 14, 2024December 14, 2024

Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar today addressed the 50th Foundation Day celebration of the Indian Posts & Telecommunications Accounts and Finance Service (IP&TAFS) at the ICWA in New Delhi. As the chief guest, he shared insights on the institutional challenges facing today’s society, emphasizing that these challenges often arise from the erosion of meaningful dialogue and authentic expression. He highlighted the essential role of both expression and communication in democracy, calling them “priceless jewels” that complement each other. According to the Vice President, the harmony between these forces is key to success.

Shri Dhankhar stressed that democracy thrives not only on systems but on core values. He underlined that the balance of expression and dialogue shapes the vitality of democracy and that progress is measured by the broader societal benefit rather than individual positions. Reflecting on India’s democratic journey, he pointed out how the country’s diversity and vast demographic potential have contributed to national progress, linking democratic health and economic productivity as essential partners in development.

The Vice President also shared a personal reflection on ego, noting that it is an irrepressible force that damages those who possess it, and emphasized the importance of self-audit. He warned that an individual or institution beyond scrutiny is doomed to degeneration, stressing that self-reflection and accountability are crucial for growth and sustainability.

Shri Dhankhar then addressed modern civil servants, urging them to be tech-savvy and act as facilitators of change. He spoke about the ongoing digital revolution, where technologies like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain present both challenges and opportunities. He called on civil servants to adapt service delivery methods, turning technological challenges into opportunities to ensure seamless connections for citizens and contribute to the vision of a developed nation by 2047.

Further, the Vice President highlighted the importance of cross-departmental coordination, noting that in an interconnected world, synergy between different sectors is essential. He reiterated that the doctrine of the separation of powers should not hinder collaboration but promote harmony between the judiciary, executive, and legislature. Shri Dhankhar also urged civil servants to focus on bridging the digital divide, particularly in rural areas, and leverage India’s demographic dividend by fostering digital skills and entrepreneurship among the youth.

Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Shri Manish Sinha, Member (Finance) of the Digital Communications Commission, and other dignitaries also attended the event.
