XR Creator Hackathon in Delhi Showcases India’s Rising Talent in Immersive Technology

RR Team, February 13, 2025

The XR Creator Hackathon in Delhi brought together some of the brightest minds in Extended Reality (XR), pushing the boundaries of innovation and creativity. Held on February 8 at 91 Springboard, Noida, and co-hosted by Wavelaps and Bharat XR, the event was part of the WAVE Summit initiative. It provided a platform for over 80 passionate participants eager to explore cutting-edge XR technologies. With support from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting under the Create In India Challenge of WAVES, the event reinforced India’s commitment to advancing immersive technology.

The hackathon featured an impressive lineup of industry experts, including Ms. Chhavi Garg, Mr. Ankit Raghav, and Mr. Siddharth Satyarthi, who conducted in-depth sessions on Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Participants gained hands-on experience with tools such as Unity and Unreal Engine, diving deep into the process of developing XR applications. These sessions were not just technical lessons but also opportunities to understand real-world applications of XR technology across various industries.

One of the most exciting moments of the event was the presence of Mr. Ashutosh Mohle, Joint Director at the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the nodal officer for WAVES. His attendance underscored the government’s proactive role in fostering India’s creator economy and supporting technological innovation.

A key highlight of the hackathon was an engaging VR activity session where participants got to experience groundbreaking projects developed by their peers. Among the standout demonstrations were a virtual simulation of Chandrayaan, a high-intensity Gaming Warfare experience, and a cutting-edge VR tourism application. These projects showcased the incredible potential of XR in education, entertainment, and industry, inspiring both participants and spectators alike.

Ms. Chhavi Garg, Co-founder of Arexa and Bharat XR, emphasized the growing possibilities of XR technology, stating that its true potential is unlocked when combined with other advancements such as AI, web platforms, and mobile applications. Echoing this sentiment, Ashutosh Kumar, CEO of Wavelaps, highlighted the significance of government and industry collaborations in empowering India’s XR ecosystem. “These initiatives are creating a space for students and professionals to innovate within India and showcase their talent to the world,” he said.

The hackathon also attracted notable media attention, with coverage from DD News, All India Radio, and other prominent outlets. This exposure helped bring XR technology into the spotlight, encouraging wider adoption and awareness. The interactive nature of the event fostered engagement and learning, making it a truly enriching experience for all involved.

The Delhi chapter was part of a larger initiative, the XR Creator Hackathon, which has already earned recognition as India’s largest VR/AR hackathon. With over 2,200 registrations from 250+ cities, the competition has entered Phase 3, where the top 40 teams are now vying for a coveted place in the final top five. Their projects span multiple themes, pushing the boundaries of what XR can achieve.

This initiative falls under the larger Wave Summit, a flagship effort aimed at celebrating India’s advancements in creative technologies. By fostering collaboration between creators, industry leaders, and government bodies, the summit plays a crucial role in driving innovation in immersive technology.

The XR Creator Hackathon stands as a testament to India’s thriving XR landscape. It brings together talented individuals from across the country, providing them with the resources, mentorship, and exposure needed to shape the future of immersive technologies. As XR continues to evolve, events like this ensure that India remains at the forefront of the global innovation wave.
