Zoo Summer Camp Highlights Fight Against Plastic Pollution

RR Team, June 6, 2025June 6, 2025

📍New Delhi | June 6, 2025 —
The Summer Vacation Programme 2025 at the National Zoological Park, New Delhi, wrapped up successfully on June 5, aligning with World Environment Day. This two-week-long event focused on the global theme — “Ending Plastic Pollution” — and left participants more aware and committed to environmental protection.

🌍 A Programme with Purpose

Organised from May 22 to June 5, the summer programme aimed to spread awareness about plastic pollution, especially its impact on wildlife and ecosystems.

The initiative was a joint effort by the National Zoological Park, the National Museum of Natural History, and the EIACP Programme Centre & Resource Partner at WWF-India.

It coincided with World Environment Day, a global event led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and celebrated every year since 1973.

🧒 Learning through Fun and Interaction

Throughout the programme, a variety of interactive activities were held. These included:

  • Workshops

  • Field-based learning

  • Awareness drives

  • Competitions

  • Creative sessions

The goal was to educate children and visitors about the dangers of plastic waste and to promote eco-friendly habits in daily life.

Participants were encouraged to rethink their plastic usage and embrace alternatives like cloth bags, steel bottles, and reusable containers.

🎉 Grand Finale with Enthusiastic Participation

The programme concluded with a special event at the Education Centre of the zoo on June 5, 2025.

More than 390 people attended, including:

  • 150 students

  • Teachers and parents

  • Zoo officials

  • EIACP staff and volunteers

One of the most loved activities was the guided zoo tour, which helped students understand the link between plastic waste and wildlife health.

🎨 Student Creativity on Display

The event also featured an exhibition of artworks created by students during the camp. These included:

  • Posters

  • Poems

  • Short stories

  • Songs

All showcased their understanding of environmental issues, especially plastic pollution.

Students shared how their views changed during the camp and what they learned from the experts, nature, and one another.

👏 Special Guests Appreciate Young Voices

The highlight of the closing ceremony was an interactive session with:

  • Dr. G. Areendran, Director and Coordinator, EIACP, MoEF&CC

  • Dr. Sanjeet Kumar, Director, National Zoological Park

Both guests praised the students’ efforts and gave out certificates and souvenirs to all active participants.

Out of the 372 registered participants, 238 joined regularly in all activities — showing strong commitment.

Additionally, over 4,500 zoo visitors were engaged in special awareness activities during the two-week programme.

🌱 A Lasting Impact

The event ended with light refreshments and smiles all around.

More than just a summer camp, the programme served as a platform to plant the seed of environmental responsibility in young minds.

It reinforced the idea that small actions — like saying no to plastic — can lead to big changes for the planet.

The Summer Vacation Programme 2025 ended on a positive note, spreading awareness about reducing plastic pollution and protecting the environment.
