2 Held for Aiding LeT in Pahalgam Attack

RR Team, June 22, 2025June 22, 2025

Major Arrests in Pahalgam Terror Probe

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested two Pahalgam residents—Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar—for sheltering three Pakistani terrorists affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), who executed the Baisaran Valley attack.

The duo provided food, shelter, and logistical support to the attackers in a seasonal hut (dhok) located in Hill Park. NIA officials confirmed that both men knew the terrorists’ identities and affiliations.

Attack Driven by Religious Targeting

On April 22, the Pakistani terrorists opened fire on tourists in Baisaran Valley, deliberately targeting them based on religion. The attack killed 26 people and seriously injured 16 others.

The assault sparked outrage across India and heightened concerns about Pakistan-backed cross-border terrorism. Investigators noted that the attack followed LeT’s historical pattern of religiously motivated violence in Kashmir.

Charges and Legal Action

The NIA charged Parvaiz and Bashir under Section 19 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, which criminalizes harbouring or supporting terrorists. Officials believe more arrests may follow as they uncover deeper links.

NIA officials stressed that such complex attacks in remote regions like Pahalgam often depend on local logistical support.

FATF Flags Pakistan’s Role in Terror Funding

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) condemned the Pahalgam attack and hinted at re-listing Pakistan on its grey list. FATF criticized the apparent failure to curb terror financing and coordination across the border.

“These kinds of attacks rely on financial infrastructure and organized support networks,” a senior NIA officer said while briefing the media.

Impact on Kashmir’s Tourism and Security

The attack has shaken confidence in Kashmir’s tourism industry. The region, often praised as ‘Paradise on Earth,’ now faces growing fear and uncertainty.

Tourism authorities have joined hands with law enforcement to enhance security and reassure visitors. “We must protect the Valley’s peaceful recovery,” a local tourism officer stated.

Investigation Expands Across the Region

The NIA continues to probe deeper connections. Investigators are reviewing digital footprints, financial records, and communication logs to identify more local facilitators and sleeper cells.

Security agencies have increased patrols and surveillance in Pahalgam and surrounding regions to prevent further threats.
