28th CSPOC 2026 a Grand Success, Says Lok Sabha Speaker

RR Team, January 29, 2026January 29, 2026
The 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) 2026 was a resounding success, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla informed the House on Thursday. Addressing Members during the proceedings, the Speaker highlighted India’s role in successfully hosting the prestigious parliamentary conference after a gap of 16 years, reaffirming the country’s standing as a strong and vibrant democracy.

Conference Hosted by India After 16 Years

Shri Om Birla informed the House that the Parliament of India hosted the 28th CSPOC from January 14 to January 16, 2026. This marked a significant moment as India hosted the Commonwealth Speakers’ conference after a long interval of 16 years. The event was seen as a milestone in India’s parliamentary diplomacy and global democratic engagement.

The conference was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on January 15, 2026, at the Central Hall of the historic Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi. The venue, symbolic of India’s constitutional heritage, provided an apt setting for deliberations on the future of democratic institutions.

Wide Participation from Commonwealth Nations

The Lok Sabha Speaker noted that the conference witnessed participation from Speakers and Presiding Officers representing 53 Commonwealth countries and 14 semi-autonomous parliaments. A record number of 60 Speakers and Presiding Officers attended the event, along with around 200 delegates, making it one of the most well-attended editions of CSPOC.

The large turnout reflected the trust and respect that India commands within the Commonwealth parliamentary community. According to Shri Birla, the presence of such a diverse group of parliamentary leaders enriched discussions and facilitated meaningful exchange of ideas.

Special Invitees and Key Discussions

The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr. Tulia Ackson, and the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Dr. Christopher Kalila, attended the conference as special invitees. Their participation underscored the global importance of the deliberations held during the three-day event.

Key issues affecting Members of Parliament were discussed at length. These included the role of Speakers and Presiding Officers in strengthening democratic institutions, the growing use of artificial intelligence in parliamentary functioning, and the impact of social media on elected representatives.

Focus on Public Engagement and MPs’ Well-being

Discussions also focused on innovative strategies to improve public understanding of parliamentary processes and increase citizen participation in democratic systems. Delegates exchanged best practices on making legislatures more accessible, transparent, and responsive to the public.

Another important theme was the safety, health, and well-being of Members of Parliament and parliamentary staff. Shri Birla emphasized that safeguarding the physical and mental well-being of legislators is essential for the effective functioning of democratic institutions.

Bilateral Meetings and Global Appreciation

On the sidelines of the conference, the Lok Sabha Speaker held bilateral meetings with Speakers and Presiding Officers from 40 participating countries. During these interactions, visiting dignitaries appreciated India’s robust parliamentary traditions and democratic values.

Many delegates expressed their desire to strengthen cooperation and maintain close, friendly relations with India. Shri Birla said these engagements further enhanced India’s parliamentary outreach and reinforced mutual trust among Commonwealth nations.

Cultural Visit to Jaipur

Continuing with CSPOC traditions, a cultural visit to Jaipur was organized for the visiting delegations on January 17, 2026, after the conclusion of the conference. The visit offered international delegates an opportunity to experience India’s rich heritage and cultural diversity.

The Lok Sabha Speaker concluded by stating that the successful conduct of the 28th CSPOC reflected India’s commitment to democratic ideals and constructive global engagement.
