5.8 Quake Jolts Assam, Tremors Reported in Bhutan, Bengal

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Assam’s Guwahati on Sunday afternoon, sending shockwaves across the northeastern region and neighbouring Bhutan. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake struck at 4:41 pm with its epicenter near Udalguri, about 5 kilometres deep.
Tremors were strongly felt in Guwahati, North Bengal, and Bhutan, prompting people to rush outdoors in panic. Videos and images quickly circulated on social media showing flowerpots shaking and households briefly disrupted.

Government Response

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed there were no reports of casualties or major property damage. He said authorities are “actively monitoring the situation” and urged citizens to remain calm.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, a former chief minister of Assam, also posted on X (formerly Twitter), urging people to stay alert. “Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being. Urge all to stay alert,” he wrote.

High-Risk Seismic Zone

Seismologists noted that the Northeast region lies in a high seismic zone, making it prone to frequent earthquakes. Just two weeks earlier, on September 2, a 3.5 magnitude quake had struck Sonitpur district.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has repeatedly advised residents in the region to follow earthquake safety protocols, including identifying safe exit routes and avoiding panic during tremors.

Social Media Reactions

The hashtag #Guwahati trended on X soon after the tremors. Many users shared personal experiences, with some describing it as one of the strongest quakes they had felt in recent years.

Looking Ahead

While the quake caused no immediate damage, experts have stressed the need for preparedness and public awareness in Assam and the wider Northeast. Safety drills, quake-resistant construction, and public education remain critical to reducing risks in the event of stronger earthquakes in the future.
