Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed there were no reports of casualties or major property damage. He said authorities are “actively monitoring the situation” and urged citizens to remain calm.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, a former chief minister of Assam, also posted on X (formerly Twitter), urging people to stay alert. “Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being. Urge all to stay alert,” he wrote.
High-Risk Seismic Zone
Seismologists noted that the Northeast region lies in a high seismic zone, making it prone to frequent earthquakes. Just two weeks earlier, on September 2, a 3.5 magnitude quake had struck Sonitpur district.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has repeatedly advised residents in the region to follow earthquake safety protocols, including identifying safe exit routes and avoiding panic during tremors.
