Mumbai is set to host a major conference on cruise tourism, ‘Waterways to Wonder: Unlocking Cruise Tourism’, on August 18. Organised by the Mumbai Port Trust in collaboration with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Indian Ports Association (IPA), the event will bring together policymakers, industry experts, and tourism stakeholders to explore India’s growing potential in cruise tourism.

Focus on Policy and Sustainable Growth

The conference will feature panel discussions, presentations, and keynote addresses from dignitaries representing the Ministry of Tourism, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW). Key topics include strategic vision for cruise tourism, regulatory frameworks, cultural itineraries, smart cruise terminals, and green port strategies.

NAVIC Cell 4: Driving Tourism Innovation

The event will also highlight achievements by NAVIC Cell 4, a specialised unit of MoPSW focused on tourism, ferries, and lighthouse-based attractions. Its vision is to establish India as a global hub for cruise tourism by developing sustainable ocean and river cruise circuits. Shri Vijay Kumar, IAS, Chairman of IWAI and Nodal Officer of NAVIC Cell 4, will deliver the keynote address.

Industry Voices and Expert Insights

Panelists include Shri Vikas Narwal, IAS, MD of IPA; Shri A.K. Bansal, Chief Engineer of IWAI; Shri Opesh Sharma, Director (Cruise), MoPSW; and private cruise operators such as Antara Cruises and Nordic Cruiseline. Their discussions will focus on creating world-class experiences while ensuring environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.

Looking Ahead to India Maritime Week 2025

The half-day conference will conclude with a preview of India Maritime Week 2025, scheduled for October. IMW 2025 aims to showcase India’s advancements in the maritime sector and foster international cooperation to position the country as a leader in cruise and coastal tourism.
