Navratri Day 6: Maa Katyayani Puja, Rituals Colour & Timings

RR Team, September 27, 2025September 27, 2025
The sixth day of Navratri, also known as Shashthi, will be observed on September 27, 2025. This day is dedicated to Maa Katyayani, one of the fiercest forms of Goddess Parvati. Worshipping her is believed to bless devotees with courage, protection from negativity, harmony, and even prospects of marital bliss.

Who is Maa Katyayani?

According to Hindu scriptures, Maa Parvati assumed the form of Katyayani to destroy the demon Mahishasura. Born in the house of Sage Katya, she came to be known as Katyayani. She is considered the warrior aspect of Maa Durga. The goddess is depicted riding a lion and holding a lotus and sword in her left hands, while blessing devotees with her right hands in Abhaya and Varada Mudra. Maa Katyayani is also associated with the planet Brihaspati (Jupiter).

Significance of Worship on Day 6

Devotees believe that offering prayers to Maa Katyayani helps overcome obstacles, removes fear, and instills inner strength. She is also revered by unmarried women seeking blessings for marriage. Her worship symbolizes victory of righteousness over evil forces and strengthens spiritual discipline.

Puja Timings and Muhurat

According to Drik Panchang, the auspicious timings for Day 6 are as follows:

  • Shukla Shashthi begins: 12:03 PM, September 27
  • Shukla Shashthi ends: 2:27 PM, September 28
  • Anuradha Nakshatra: up to 1:08 AM, September 28
  • Brahma Muhurta: 4:36 AM – 5:24 AM
  • Abhijit Muhurta: 11:48 AM – 12:36 PM
  • Vijaya Muhurta: 2:12 PM – 3:00 PM
  • Amrit Kalam: 1:26 PM – 3:14 PM

Auspicious Colour for the Day

The colour associated with the sixth day of Navratri is grey. This shade symbolizes balanced emotions, humility, and stability. Wearing grey while worshipping Maa Katyayani is said to enhance grounded strength and inner calm.

Puja Rituals and Bhog

On this day, devotees rise early, take a holy bath, and prepare a clean space for worship. A diya is lit, and offerings such as shringar items, garlands, and vermillion are presented to Maa Katyayani. The traditional bhog includes meetha paan, five seasonal fruits, honey, and simple sweets. Performing Durga Saptashati Path and a hawan is also considered highly auspicious.

Chants and Mantras

Devotees recite the following to invoke Maa Katyayani’s blessings:

  • Mantra: Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah॥
  • Prarthana: Chandrahasojjvalakara Shardulavaravahana। Katyayani Shubham Dadyad Devi Danavaghatini॥
  • Stuti: Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Ma Katyayani Rupena Samsthita। Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah॥

By following these rituals with devotion, worshippers seek Maa Katyayani’s grace for a harmonious and fearless life.
