Arijit Singh Announces Retirement From Playback Singing

RR Team, January 28, 2026January 28, 2026
In a development that has stunned the Indian music industry, celebrated singer Arijit Singh has announced his decision to step away from playback singing. The announcement came through a message shared on his social media platforms, where the singer said he would no longer take up any new assignments as a playback vocalist.
The decision comes at the peak of Singh’s career, when he remains one of the most in-demand and widely loved voices in Hindi cinema. His announcement has triggered an emotional response from fans and fellow musicians across the country.

‘I Am Calling It Off’: Arijit Singh’s Message

In his note, Arijit Singh thanked listeners for their support over the years and said the journey had been deeply fulfilling. “I am happy to announce that I am not going to be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey,” he wrote.

He clarified that the move does not mean an end to music altogether. Singh said he would continue learning, creating, and releasing music independently, while also completing a few pending commitments already recorded for upcoming projects.

Will Continue Making Music Independently

Addressing concerns from fans, the singer emphasised that music would always remain central to his life. He said he plans to explore his artistic instincts without the framework of film playback singing, describing himself as a lifelong admirer of good music.

Singh added that some releases featuring his voice may still arrive over the course of the year, as he intends to honour prior commitments. However, he made it clear that he would not accept any fresh film offers going forward.

Fans React With Shock and Disbelief

The announcement sparked an outpouring of reactions online. Fans flooded the comment sections of his posts, expressing disbelief and urging the singer to reconsider. Many described the decision as “too soon,” while others said Hindi cinema would feel incomplete without his voice.

Several musicians and industry insiders also expressed surprise, noting that Singh’s influence on contemporary film music remains unmatched.

A Journey From Reality TV to Stardom

Arijit Singh’s rise in the Indian music industry has been remarkable. He first gained public attention as a contestant on the reality television show Fame Gurukul in 2005, though success did not come immediately.

His playback debut arrived in 2011 with the song Phir Mohabbat from the film Murder 2. The turning point came two years later with Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2, a song that transformed him into a household name.

Defining the Sound of Modern Hindi Cinema

Following his breakthrough, Singh became synonymous with emotion-driven melodies. He delivered a string of chart-topping songs across genres, including romantic ballads, heartbreak anthems, and celebratory tracks.

His voice featured prominently in songs such as Channa Mereya, Agar Tum Saath Ho, Raabta, Kesariya, Gerua, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Chaleya, cementing his place among the most influential playback singers of his generation.

Versatility Across Languages and Platforms

Beyond Hindi cinema, Arijit Singh recorded songs in multiple Indian languages, including Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi. His collaborations spanned leading composers, directors, and actors, making his voice a constant presence across film industries.

His contributions earned him several prestigious awards, including multiple Filmfare honours for Best Male Playback Singer.

Global Streaming Milestone

In July 2025, Singh achieved a major global milestone by becoming the most-followed artist on Spotify, surpassing international stars such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. With over 151 million followers, he emerged as a rare Indian artist with unmatched global streaming reach.

The achievement highlighted his enduring popularity and the emotional connection his music shares with listeners worldwide.
