AAIB Update on Baramati Learjet Crash Probe

RR Team, February 17, 2026February 17, 2026
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has released a detailed update on its ongoing probe into the Learjet 45 aircraft (VT-SSK) accident that occurred at Baramati on January 28, 2026. The Bureau confirmed that the investigation is being conducted strictly in accordance with the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017, and the international standards prescribed under ICAO Annex 13.

Flight Recorders Retrieved Despite Fire Damage

the Learjet 45 was equipped with two independent flight recorders. Both devices were subjected to intense heat and prolonged exposure to fire during the accident, resulting in visible damage.

Despite the severe fire impact, the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR), manufactured by L3-Communications, has been successfully downloaded at the AAIB’s Flight Recorder Laboratory. This marks a significant step forward in reconstructing the sequence of events leading to the accident.

CVR Under Technical Examination

The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), manufactured by Honeywell, is currently undergoing detailed technical analysis. Investigators are working to assess the extent of the fire damage and retrieve usable audio data that could shed light on cockpit communications prior to the incident.

To facilitate specialised data extraction, the AAIB has sought assistance from the Accredited Representative of the State of Manufacture. Such collaboration aligns with international investigation protocols and ensures adherence to globally accepted technical standards.

Investigation as per ICAO Norms

The AAIB emphasized that the investigation is being carried out in compliance with ICAO Annex 13, which lays down international standards for aircraft accident investigations. These guidelines ensure objectivity, independence, and evidence-based findings.

The Bureau reiterated its commitment to maintaining transparency while safeguarding the integrity of the investigative process. Officials confirmed that all technical and procedural protocols are being meticulously followed.

Focus on Evidence-Based Findings

Investigators are currently analysing the retrieved flight data to establish an accurate timeline of events. The DFDR data is expected to provide critical parameters such as altitude, airspeed, engine performance, and control inputs during the final phase of flight.

The CVR examination, once completed, may offer additional context by capturing cockpit conversations and ambient sounds. Together, these recorders are key components in understanding both technical and human factors associated with the accident.

Appeal Against Speculation

In its statement, the AAIB urged all stakeholders, including media organisations and aviation observers, to refrain from speculation while the investigation is underway. The Bureau stressed that premature conclusions can undermine the credibility of the process.

The AAIB assured that further updates will be shared at an appropriate stage once verified findings become available. This measured approach aims to ensure accuracy and prevent the spread of misinformation.

Role of AAIB in Aviation Safety

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau functions under the Ministry of Civil Aviation and serves as India’s designated authority for investigating civil aviation accidents. Its mandate includes identifying probable causes and recommending safety measures to prevent recurrence.

By adhering to both domestic regulations and international aviation standards, the AAIB plays a crucial role in strengthening India’s aviation safety framework. The Baramati Learjet 45 investigation remains a priority case under its ongoing mandate.

As technical analysis progresses, aviation experts and regulators await detailed findings that could provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the VT-SSK accident.
