AIM, Bhashini Partner to Boost Vernacular Innovation

RR Team, August 7, 2025

New Delhi, August 7, 2025 — In a major step towards breaking language barriers in India’s innovation ecosystem, Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) have signed a strategic Statement of Intent (SoI) to promote vernacular innovation and inclusive growth across the country.

Breaking Language Barriers in Innovation

The partnership was formalized at a high-level meeting between Deepak Bagla, Mission Director of AIM, and Amitabh Nag, CEO of Bhashini. Both sides discussed how to use cutting-edge language technologies to make innovation more accessible to India’s diverse linguistic population.

The collaboration reflects a shared vision—to ensure that no Indian innovator is left behind due to language limitations.

Translating Global Knowledge for Local Impact

As the first major initiative, content from the WIPO Academy will be translated into multiple Indian languages using Bhashini’s AI-powered language tools.

This translation drive stems from a Joint Letter of Intent previously signed between AIM, NITI Aayog, and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The goal is clear—equip innovators with knowledge in their mother tongue.

This effort will democratize access to intellectual property education, especially among grassroots innovators and startups across India’s 22 scheduled languages and beyond.

Gamification and Multilingual Tools for Startups

Future plans include gamifying learning modules using Bhashini platforms. This will make learning interactive, local, and scalable.

Startups within AIM’s ecosystem—including Atal Incubation Centres (AICs) and Atal Community Innovation Centres (ACICs)—will gain access to Bhashini’s sandbox environment and multilingual APIs to develop inclusive digital products.

This move is a huge win for India’s startup community, especially those operating in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.

Introducing LIPI: Language Inclusive Program for Innovation

In addition to strengthening existing AIM centres, the partners plan to launch Language Inclusive Program for Innovation (LIPI) centres. These will focus on capacity building and skilling at the grassroots level using Bhashini’s technologies.

From farmer innovators in rural Madhya Pradesh to student entrepreneurs in Odisha, everyone will now have equal opportunity to innovate in their native language.

Voices Behind the Vision

“This collaboration supports our broader goal of fostering inclusive innovation,” said Deepak Bagla, Mission Director of AIM. “We’re making sure innovation is not just for the English-speaking elite, but for every Indian with an idea.”

Amitabh Nag, CEO of Bhashini, added, “Language should never be a barrier to innovation. Our tools will help bridge communication gaps and unlock new potential across India’s innovation landscape.”

Why This Matters: Vernacular Innovation as a Growth Engine

India has over 121 spoken languages and thousands of dialects. Yet, a significant portion of innovation programs remains limited to English or Hindi.

By integrating Bhashini’s language tech with AIM’s innovation frameworks, the government is removing a long-standing bottleneck.

This partnership not only empowers rural and regional innovators but also aligns with India’s Digital India goals and the vision of an inclusive $5 trillion economy.

What Comes Next?

  • Translation of global learning content for Indian entrepreneurs
  • Gamified vernacular learning modules
  • Sandbox access for startups to build multilingual apps
  • Launch of LIPI centres across states for skilling
  • Integration of Bhashini tools into AIM’s flagship programs

Through this strategic SoI, AIM and Bhashini are not just collaborating—they are co-creating a future where every Indian, regardless of language, can dream, design, and deliver innovation.
