Ajit Pawar Dies in Plane Crash in Maharashtra’s Baramati

RR Team, January 28, 2026January 28, 2026
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar died on Wednesday after the private aircraft he was travelling in crash-landed at Baramati airport in Pune district. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the state and the national political landscape.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the aircraft had taken off from Mumbai earlier in the morning and was attempting to land at Baramati, Pawar’s home constituency, when the accident occurred. Two members of Pawar’s staff and two crew members were also killed in the crash.

Crash During Second Landing Attempt

Preliminary information shared by aviation officials suggests that the aircraft was making a second approach to the runway when it went down at approximately 8:45 am local time. Flight-tracking data indicated unstable descent conditions moments before the crash.

Eyewitnesses described a massive fireball after the aircraft hit the ground. Locals rushed to the site in an attempt to rescue passengers, but the intensity of the flames made rescue efforts impossible. Multiple explosions were reportedly heard shortly after impact.

DGCA Orders Detailed Investigation

The DGCA has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Officials said a technical team has been dispatched to Baramati to examine flight data, wreckage, and maintenance records of the aircraft, a Learjet 45 operated by a private charter company.

India’s aviation safety protocols mandate a full inquiry in such incidents, with findings to be submitted to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Updates are expected after forensic and technical assessments are completed.

On Way to Political Engagement

Ajit Pawar was reportedly travelling to attend a public rally related to the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections. A dominant figure in Maharashtra politics, Pawar had remained deeply engaged in grassroots campaigning despite holding one of the highest executive offices in the state.

The 66-year-old leader was the nephew of veteran politician Sharad Pawar, founder of the NCP. Over decades, Ajit Pawar carved out his own political identity, particularly in western Maharashtra’s cooperative and sugar belt regions.

Political Legacy and Influence

Known for his administrative grip and strong rural connect, Pawar served multiple terms as a cabinet minister and deputy chief minister. He played a central role in coalition politics and was widely regarded as a formidable strategist within Maharashtra’s complex political ecosystem.

As a key ally in the ruling coalition at the state level, Pawar’s death is expected to have significant political ramifications. Party workers and supporters gathered in large numbers at Baramati and Mumbai as news of the tragedy spread.

Condolences Pour In

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep shock over Pawar’s death, calling it an “untimely and saddening loss.” In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister said Pawar was widely respected for his hard work and commitment to public service.

Leaders across party lines also expressed condolences, acknowledging Pawar’s contribution to Maharashtra’s development. The state government is expected to announce official mourning and details of last rites shortly.

Nation Mourns a Senior Leader

The sudden loss of Ajit Pawar marks the end of an era in Maharashtra politics. For supporters and critics alike, he remained a decisive and influential figure whose impact on state governance will be remembered for years to come.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring transparency and accountability while the nation mourns one of its most prominent regional leaders.
