Amrit Bharat Express Boosts Affordable Rail Travel

RR Team, January 17, 2026January 17, 2026
The Amrit Bharat Express, launched in December 2023 as part of India’s Amrit Kaal initiatives, is transforming affordable long-distance rail travel. With 30 operational trains and nine new services introduced recently, the network now connects remote regions, border areas, pilgrimage centres, and major cities across India, providing reliable, non-AC sleeper travel for the common passenger at approximately ₹500 per 1,000 kilometres.

Empowering Everyday Journeys

Indian Railways has long been a cornerstone of the nation’s social and economic mobility. The Amrit Bharat Express aims to extend the comfort, convenience, and safety typically associated with premium trains to the non-AC segment, supporting travel for employment, education, healthcare, and family needs. Its passenger-centric design prioritises accessibility without dynamic pricing, ensuring affordability and inclusivity for millions of travellers.

Design and Facilities

The trains feature 11 General Class coaches, 8 Sleeper Class coaches, 1 Pantry Car, and 2 Second Class–cum–Luggage–cum–Guard Vans with disabled-friendly compartments. Designed for high-volume, long-distance travel, these trains cater to passengers in the non-AC segment while maintaining modern comfort and reliability.

Expanding Connectivity: Nine New Routes

The new Amrit Bharat Express services extend long-distance connectivity across strategic corridors:

  • Kamakhya-Rohtak: Linking Assam with Haryana, enhancing access across six states and connecting spiritual and historical sites.
  • Dibrugarh-Lucknow: Connecting North-East India to Uttar Pradesh, supporting tourism, trade, and employment mobility.
  • New Jalpaiguri-Nagercoil: Bridging eastern Himalayan foothills with southern India, supporting economic integration and tourism.
  • New Jalpaiguri-Tiruchirappalli: Connecting education and cultural hubs across India, promoting regional development.
  • Alipurduar-Bengaluru: Enhancing east–south connectivity from a strategic border district to the tech capital.
  • Alipurduar-Mumbai (Panvel): Creating an east–west corridor from North Bengal to Mumbai, boosting tourism and trade.
  • Santragachi-Tambaram: Linking eastern India with Chennai’s suburban hub, facilitating access to education, healthcare, and markets.
  • Howrah-Anand Vihar: Fast, dependable service connecting Eastern India to the National Capital Region.
  • Kolkata (Sealdah)-Banaras: Daily service enhancing religious tourism and cultural connectivity.

Impact on Mobility and Development

The Amrit Bharat Express strengthens national integration, boosts regional trade, promotes tourism, and supports employment mobility. By connecting remote border areas, industrial hubs, and pilgrimage centres, it bridges geographic and economic divides, making rail travel more inclusive and accessible for all segments of society.

With its expanding network, the Amrit Bharat Express represents a milestone in India’s effort to provide affordable, reliable, and high-quality long-distance rail travel, reinforcing Indian Railways’ role as a lifeline for millions of passengers across the country.
