Growth in Medical Education Infrastructure
Addressing the graduates, the Union Minister underlined the expansion of medical education facilities across the country. She noted that the number of medical colleges has increased from 387 to 819 in the last 11 years. Undergraduate medical seats have risen from 51,000 to 1.28 lakh, while postgraduate seats have increased from 31,000 to nearly 82,000.
She also pointed out that the number of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has grown from seven to 23, significantly strengthening tertiary healthcare and specialized medical training in the country.
Strengthening Healthcare at All Levels
Smt. Patel emphasized that the government has focused on strengthening healthcare delivery at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. More than 1.82 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs are now operational across India, providing comprehensive primary healthcare services.
She added that critical gaps in secondary healthcare facilities, such as Community Health Centres and district hospitals, are being addressed, while tertiary care institutions are being expanded alongside reforms in medical education.
Ayushman Bharat and Affordable Healthcare
Highlighting flagship initiatives, the Union Minister said that over 62 crore people, accounting for more than 40 percent of India’s population, are receiving free health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).
She also mentioned schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana and Amrit Pharmacies, which provide affordable medicines, medical devices, and surgical implants to the public.
Message to Young Doctors
Congratulating the graduating students, Smt. Patel reminded them that their degrees represent not only academic achievement but also a commitment to compassion, ethics, and service. She urged young doctors to serve underserved and marginalized communities with dedication and empathy.
She encouraged graduates to actively contribute to research and academics, stating that doctors enter into a social contract with society and must always uphold the human touch in medical practice.
Degrees and Awards Conferred
During the ceremony, degrees were awarded to more than 217 postgraduate students, 136 undergraduate students, and 40 super-specialty students. Additionally, 43 students were honoured with medals in recognition of their outstanding academic performance and dedication.
