Ashwini Vaishnaw Launches Major Rail Projects in West Bengal

RR Team, February 8, 2026February 9, 2026
West Bengal received a major push to its rail and transport infrastructure on Saturday as Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the Siuri Road Over Bridge, dedicated the Kumarpur Road Over Bridge to the nation, and flagged off a new Asansol–Bokaro Steel City train service. The projects, launched via video conferencing, are aimed at improving safety, easing congestion and strengthening regional connectivity across the state and neighbouring Jharkhand.

Addressing the event, the Union Minister said the initiatives reflect the Centre’s commitment to modernising railway infrastructure in eastern India. He highlighted that West Bengal has been allocated a record ₹14,205 crore for railway development in the current financial year, more than three times the average annual allocation made between 2009 and 2014.

Record Investment in Bengal’s Rail Network

Shri Vaishnaw noted that railway projects worth nearly ₹92,000 crore are currently underway in West Bengal, signalling a transformational phase for the state’s transport ecosystem. He added that improved rail infrastructure will play a key role in boosting economic activity, supporting industrial growth and improving the quality of life for millions of residents.

The Minister also referred to recent initiatives by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the launch of multiple new train services to enhance connectivity within the state. He pointed out that the first Vande Bharat Sleeper train has already started operations from West Bengal, underscoring the Centre’s focus on the eastern region under the ‘Purvoday’ vision.

Future Rail Projects Announced

Highlighting upcoming plans, Shri Vaishnaw said that the Rail Budget has announced the first Bullet Train project for West Bengal, which will originate from Siliguri. He also mentioned the approval of an East–West Dedicated Freight Corridor connecting West Bengal with Gujarat, a move expected to significantly strengthen logistics and freight movement across the country.

Another strategic initiative includes the construction of an underground rail corridor in the sensitive ‘Chicken-Neck’ region of North Bengal. This project aims to ensure safer and more secure transportation in an area of critical national importance.

Siuri Road Over Bridge Enhances Safety

The newly constructed Road Over Bridge near Siuri Railway Station replaces Level Crossing No. 22B/T and has been completed at a cost of ₹42 crore. The bridge is expected to eliminate long waiting times at the busy crossing, ensuring smoother and faster movement for daily commuters.

By removing a critical level crossing, the ROB significantly improves safety and reduces traffic congestion around Siuri station. It will also allow uninterrupted movement of emergency vehicles, especially during medical or disaster-related situations.

Kumarpur ROB Strengthens GT Road Connectivity

The Kumarpur Road Over Bridge, constructed at a cost of ₹55 crore, replaces Level Crossing No. 1Spl/E between Barachak and Hirapur Yard Line. Located on the vital GT Road corridor, it serves as a crucial link between Asansol city, Paschim Bardhaman district and neighbouring Jharkhand.

The bridge is expected to ease congestion on one of the region’s busiest routes, facilitate smoother movement of goods and passengers, and enhance road safety. It will particularly benefit daily commuters and traders who rely heavily on this corridor.

Asansol–Bokaro Train Boosts Industrial Linkages

On the same occasion, the Union Minister flagged off the new Asansol–Bokaro Steel City MEMU passenger service, connecting two major steel and industrial hubs. The train will run through Paschim Bardhaman and Purulia districts of West Bengal and Bokaro district of Jharkhand.

The regular service of train numbers 63592/63591 will commence from February 10, 2026. It is expected to benefit industrial workers, daily commuters and local residents while strengthening inter-state economic and social ties.
