Naqvi Denies Apology to BCCI
Reports in Indian media suggested that Naqvi had apologised to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials in a recent ACC meeting. However, Naqvi categorically denied this. “I have never apologised to the BCCI, nor will I ever do so. I have done nothing wrong,” he posted on social media platform X, where his account is restricted for Indian users.
India Refused Trophy Handover
The controversy began when India defeated Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final in Dubai. During the presentation ceremony, the Indian players refused to receive the trophy from Naqvi, citing his past anti-India remarks and behaviour. Instead, they proposed receiving it from other ACC officials. This led to a heated standoff on stage, with Naqvi insisting it was his prerogative as ACC chief to hand over the silverware.
As tensions escalated, Naqvi reportedly stormed off the stage, taking the trophy with him. ACC officials followed, leaving the presentation incomplete and sparking outrage across cricketing circles.
India May Approach ICC
The incident has now spilled into cricket diplomacy. India, represented in the ACC by Rajeev Shukla and Ashish Shelar, has threatened to escalate the matter to the International Cricket Council (ICC) if the issue is not resolved swiftly. The BCCI believes the trophy is being held in Naqvi’s “personal possession” and has demanded that it be returned to the ACC.
Naqvi’s Firm Stand
Naqvi continues to defend his position, saying he remains “ready” to hand over the trophy but only if the Indian team collects it from him directly. “As ACC President, I was ready to hand over the trophy that very day, and I am still ready now. If they truly want it, they are welcome to come to the ACC office and collect it from me,” he declared.
What Lies Ahead
The trophy row has not only overshadowed India’s victory but also raised questions about the functioning of the ACC. With diplomatic sensitivities between India and Pakistan already tense, the controversy threatens to strain cricketing ties further. The ACC may need to call a special meeting to resolve the matter before it escalates to the ICC.
For now, the Asia Cup 2025 trophy remains a symbol of an unresolved dispute, with cricket fans worldwide waiting to see whether diplomacy or confrontation will define the next chapter in this saga.
