Australia Bondi Beach Terror Attack Kills 11 During Hanukkah

RR Team, December 14, 2025December 14, 2025
Australia witnessed one of its deadliest terror attacks in decades after gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, killing at least 11 people and injuring dozens. The targeted shooting, described by authorities as a terrorist incident, has drawn strong condemnation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the United Nations, and leaders across the world.
The attack occurred on Sunday evening when Jewish families had gathered to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah. Witnesses reported hearing nearly 50 gunshots as panic swept across the beachfront area, a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

Attack Declared Terror Incident

New South Wales Police confirmed that two attackers were involved in the shooting. One gunman was shot dead by police, while the second remains in critical condition. Authorities later recovered an improvised explosive device from a vehicle linked to the deceased attacker, further intensifying concerns about the scale of the planned violence.

Police officially designated the incident as a terrorist attack and are investigating whether a third suspect may have been involved. Security operations were intensified across Sydney, with authorities urging citizens to remain vigilant.

Victims and Casualties

At least 29 people, including a child and two police officers, were taken to hospitals across Sydney. Several remain in serious condition. The first confirmed victim was identified as Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a senior member of the Bondi Jewish community and assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi.

Community leaders described the loss as devastating, noting that Rabbi Schlanger had served the area for over 18 years and was widely respected for his outreach and humanitarian work.

Heroic Bystander Intervention

Amid the chaos, a dramatic moment of bravery emerged when an unarmed civilian tackled one of the attackers hiding behind a tree. The individual managed to pin the gunman down, potentially preventing further loss of life. The act has been widely praised by Australian officials and the public.

Global Condemnation and India’s Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly condemned what he termed a “ghastly terrorist attack” and expressed solidarity with Australia. “India has zero tolerance towards terrorism and stands firmly with the people of Australia in this hour of grief,” he said in a statement.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the attack as “heinous and horrifying,” particularly as it targeted families celebrating a religious festival symbolizing peace and light.

Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog, called the shooting a brutal antisemitic act and urged stronger global action against rising hatred.

Australia Calls for Unity

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese labeled the incident a “dark and devastating moment” for the nation, vowing to eradicate hate, violence, and terrorism. The national security committee convened an emergency meeting as investigations continue.

Authorities have appealed for mobile phone or dashcam footage from witnesses to assist the probe. Security alerts were also issued in several Indian metropolitan cities following intelligence inputs related to potential copycat threats.

Deadliest Attack Since Port Arthur

The Bondi Beach shooting is being described as Australia’s deadliest mass-casualty attack since the Port Arthur massacre of 1996. Analysts say the incident has reignited debates around extremism, antisemitism, and public safety in open spaces.
