He was quoting late RSS ideologue Moropant Pingle, who believed receiving a shawl at that age was a sign to gracefully retire.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut was quick to point out that Modi himself used the same retirement norm to sideline BJP veterans like L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.
“Let’s see if he applies it to himself now,” Raut challenged.
Pawan Khera of Congress echoed the sentiment, saying, “Now both Modi and Bhagwat should pick up their bags and guide each other out.”
BJP Dismisses Speculations
In May 2023, Union Home Minister Amit Shah firmly dismissed speculation about Modi’s retirement, saying, “Modi ji will continue to lead till 2029.”
Party sources maintain there’s no retirement clause in the BJP’s constitution and that age has never formally been a disqualification.
However, the perception of a 75-year rule remains due to earlier actions taken against senior leaders.
RSS-BJP Power Dynamics in Focus
Raut earlier claimed that Modi’s March visit to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur — his first in over a decade — was not just symbolic. According to him, it involved “serious discussions about succession and retirement.”
The BJP has refuted those claims, calling the visit routine and unrelated to leadership changes.
