Bhutan Extends Exposition of Buddha Relics Till Nov 25

RR Team, November 18, 2025November 18, 2025
Responding to an unprecedented outpouring of public devotion, Bhutan has formally extended the exposition of the Holy Relics of Lord Buddha by one additional week. The display, which has been drawing thousands of devotees each day in Thimphu, will now continue until November 25, 2025. The extension comes at the request of the Royal Government of Bhutan, reflecting the deep spiritual significance the relics hold for the people of the Himalayan kingdom.

The sacred relics, brought from India earlier this month, have been at the centre of a historic cultural and religious moment. Their presence in Bhutan has strengthened the shared Buddhist heritage that has long connected the two nations. According to the Ministry of Culture, the decision to extend the exposition highlights the “immense reverence and heartfelt devotion” expressed by Bhutanese citizens throughout the event.

Indian Delegation to Retrieve Relics on November 25

To facilitate the smooth and respectful return of the relics, a special aircraft will depart from India for Bhutan on November 24. The relics will be brought back to India the following day, November 25, marking the formal closure of the exposition. Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, will lead the Indian delegation for the ceremony.

The Ministry of Culture emphasized that India is deeply honoured by Bhutan’s overwhelming public response. The Ministry noted that the extension not only honours the sentiments of the Bhutanese people but also reaffirms the longstanding spiritual and cultural ties that underpin India-Bhutan relations.

A Testament to Shared Spiritual Heritage

The exposition has become one of the most significant cultural events between the two nations in recent years. Thousands of pilgrims, monks, and visitors have queued for hours to pay homage to the sacred relics. The peaceful gatherings and ceremonial offerings underscore the enduring Buddhist traditions that define both societies.

For Bhutan, the sacred relics’ presence serves as a moment of collective spiritual renewal. For India, the event stands as a demonstration of respect for Bhutan’s cultural values and the deep trust between the two countries. Officials from both sides noted that such cultural exchanges play an essential role in strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Strengthening India–Bhutan Cultural Partnership

India and Bhutan have long celebrated their shared Buddhist lineage, with cultural exchanges, pilgrimages, and spiritual diplomacy forming a key part of their bilateral engagement. The public success of the relics’ exposition highlights the emotional and cultural solidarity shared by citizens of both nations.

The Ministry of Culture also reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Bhutan in future cultural initiatives. The exposition has not only deepened spiritual ties but has also reaffirmed the partnership built on mutual respect, shared values, and centuries-old connections rooted in the teachings of Lord Buddha.
