Bihar Police to Retire Unfit Personnel in Bid to Maintain Force Efficiency

RR Team, February 9, 2025February 9, 2025

In an effort to ensure a physically and mentally fit police force, the Bihar Police has decided to retire personnel who are deemed unfit for service due to chronic illnesses or poor health. The directive, issued by Additional Director General (ADG) of Bihar Police Headquarters, Kundan Krishnan, mandates that all district Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) identify officers and personnel who fail to meet the required fitness standards.

The decision, rooted in the Bihar Police Handbook 1978 and Rule 809, underscores the importance of maintaining a force capable of handling the physical and mental demands of law enforcement. During monthly police assemblies, officers will be reminded of the significance of fitness in their profession, and those found unfit will face the possibility of retirement after a thorough medical evaluation. However, affected personnel will have the opportunity to appeal the decision, ensuring a fair process.

Additionally, the directive includes measures to address officers who have been stationed at the same location for extended periods. Such officials will be transferred based on their capabilities, and if they are found to be medically unfit, they may be encouraged to opt for voluntary retirement. Despite the strict enforcement of these policies, the ADG assured that all retiring personnel would receive their full retirement benefits, including pensions, acknowledging their years of dedicated service.

The move aims to uphold the high operational standards of the Bihar Police, ensuring that the force remains efficient and responsive. The policy also touches upon the longstanding issue of transfer requests to Patna, with many officers citing medical or family-related reasons for seeking relocation. Over a thousand police personnel recently applied for transfers to the state capital, but only around 80 were approved after careful scrutiny by the medical board. Priority was given to those whose spouses were in government jobs, ensuring a fair and balanced approach.

While the decision may be challenging for some, it reflects the Bihar Police’s commitment to efficiency, discipline, and overall well-being. By reinforcing the importance of physical fitness and strategic personnel management, the department aims to build a more robust and capable force, ready to serve and protect the people of Bihar.
