Bihar Regiment’s 21st Battalion Celebrates 44 Glorious Years

RR Team, July 20, 2025July 20, 2025
Patna, July 20, 2025: The 21st Battalion of the Bihar Regiment marked its 44th Foundation Day at a solemn and celebratory event in Danapur Cantonment, near Patna. Soldiers, veterans, and dignitaries gathered to honor the regiment’s long-standing tradition of valor, sacrifice, and discipline.

Legacy of Bravery: From Inception to Modern Combat

The 21st Battalion was raised on July 20, 1981, under the leadership of Lt Col Mohd Mansoor Mallick. Since its inception, it has stood by the motto “Karam hi Dharma hai”—duty is our religion. This guiding principle has led the battalion through some of the most critical operations in Indian military history.

Brigadier Kamal Deep Jaspal, Commandant of the Bihar Regiment Centre, presided over the event. He laid a wreath at the war memorial and paid tribute to fallen soldiers. In his speech, he highlighted the unit’s contributions to national security and called the 21st Battalion “a symbol of unwavering commitment.”

Noteworthy Deployments: Valor in Harsh Terrains

In its early years (1982–1985), the battalion was stationed in the rugged terrains of Himachal Pradesh, where it honed mountain warfare tactics and built unit cohesion. These experiences laid the foundation for their later operational successes.

During the height of insurgency in 1990, the battalion took part in Operation Bajrang in the northern theatre. This mission required not just military strength but also strategic communication and community engagement. Their success earned national recognition and respect.

Operation Rakshak: Courage Under Fire in Uri

From 1999 to 2003, the battalion was deployed in Uri as part of Operation Rakshak. This period tested every soldier’s grit as they faced near-daily infiltration attempts, ambushes, and extreme weather.

The 21st Battalion worked closely with intelligence agencies to neutralize threats and dismantle insurgent cells. Their contribution played a vital role in stabilizing the region during those volatile years.

2014 Flood Response: Soldiers as Saviors

In September 2014, the unit was once again called into action during Operation Alert. This time, the mission wasn’t on the battlefield but in flood-affected regions. Soldiers provided civil assistance and ensured safe evacuations, showcasing their adaptability and humanitarian spirit.

Tributes to Martyrs and Retired Heroes

One of the emotional highlights of the event was the gathering of retired officers and serving jawans to pay homage to martyrs. Many shared stories of camaraderie, challenges, and triumphs from their time in service.

“We are a family built on discipline and honor,” said a retired major who served during Operation Rakshak. “This regiment has always stood tall, whether in snow-covered posts or flood-ravaged villages.”

The Regiment Today: Ready for Tomorrow’s Challenges

With its long record of gallantry and nation-first attitude, the 21st Battalion continues to inspire young recruits. The Bihar Regiment Centre emphasized that the battalion remains operationally ready and morally grounded, with training programs focused on modern warfare and national disaster response.

Conclusion: Honoring the Past, Preparing for the Future

As the 21st Battalion completes 44 years, its journey serves as a powerful reminder of what commitment to duty truly means. From the icy slopes of Himachal to the volatile valleys of Uri, the soldiers of this battalion have consistently lived up to their creed.

“The story of this battalion is the story of India’s strength and resilience,” Brig Jaspal concluded. “And it will continue to shine as an example for generations of soldiers to come.”
