BIS Uncovers 142 Uncertified Products in E-Commerce Raid

RR Team, August 7, 2025August 6, 2025

New Delhi, August 7, 2025: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has uncovered a major lapse in product safety. In a sweeping market surveillance operation during FY 2024–25, the BIS found 142 uncertified products being sold online without mandatory BIS certification.

Wide-Scale BIS Surveillance Exposes Certification Violations

As per official information released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the BIS procured a total of 344 product samples from various e-commerce and quick commerce platforms. These products fell under Quality Control Orders that mandate BIS certification.

Shockingly, nearly 41% of the sampled products were found to be non-compliant. This raises serious concerns over consumer safety and online product authenticity.

Raids Across 12 States Uncover E-Commerce Lapses

To tackle these violations, the BIS initiated stringent enforcement actions. Authorities conducted search and seizure operations at 22 warehouses across 12 States and Union Territories.

  • Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra – 3 raids each
  • Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu – 2 raids each
  • Gujarat, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand – 1 raid each

Big Brands Under Scanner: Amazon, Instakart, Blinkit

Well-known e-commerce giants were at the center of this crackdown:

  • Amazon: 14 warehouses raided
  • Instakart: 7 warehouses raided
  • Blinkit: 1 warehouse raided

The BIS specifically targeted “dark stores” used by quick commerce services to deliver products in real-time. These hidden storage spaces were found to be selling uncertified goods without following Indian quality regulations.

Wider Public Awareness Campaign Launched

Following these operations, the BIS launched a widespread public awareness campaign. Updates were shared across X (Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram to inform both buyers and sellers.

The aim is to ensure that every stakeholder understands the importance of BIS certification. The message is clear — safety and quality cannot be compromised in the name of convenience.

Government Steps Up Consumer Protection

Union Minister of State, Shri B.L. Verma, presented these findings in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The government is actively tightening e-commerce compliance through these efforts.

“We are committed to upholding consumer safety and trust. These raids are a warning to all sellers who bypass Indian certification standards,” said a senior official at BIS.

Why BIS Certification Matters

BIS certification ensures that products meet Indian safety, performance, and quality standards. Products under Quality Control Orders must be tested and approved before sale.

Without certification, consumers risk buying substandard or hazardous goods — especially electronics, household appliances, and personal care items. That’s why this crackdown is being seen as a major win for consumer protection.

Next Steps: More Raids, Stricter Monitoring

The BIS has promised continued monitoring of both online and offline markets. E-commerce players are now under pressure to conduct internal audits and clean up their supply chains.

For buyers, the takeaway is simple — always check for BIS certification. Look for the ISI mark or verify the license on Manak Online before making a purchase.

Conclusion

The discovery of 142 uncertified products has sparked a nationwide debate on digital consumer safety. As India rapidly shifts to online shopping, it’s vital that standards enforcement keeps pace.

The BIS crackdown sends a strong message — non-compliance will not be tolerated. And consumers deserve nothing less than safe, certified products.
