Bitcoin Slips as Volatility Rises, Trump-Era Gains Erased

RR Team, February 8, 2026February 8, 2026
Bitcoin has erased all gains made since the election of United States President Donald Trump, underscoring growing fragility in the global cryptocurrency market as shrinking liquidity and broader financial uncertainty fuel sharp price swings.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency fell below key psychological levels this week, reflecting heightened investor caution amid concerns over global interest rate policy, equity market volatility and the sustainability of risk assets. Analysts warn that thin market depth could expose Bitcoin to further downside in the near term.

Liquidity Shrinks, Volatility Grows

Market experts say Bitcoin’s recent slump is closely linked to declining liquidity, which has made prices more sensitive to relatively small trades. As fewer buyers and sellers operate near current price levels, even modest selling pressure can trigger outsized moves.

According to crypto market data providers, Bitcoin’s average market depth has steadily declined over recent months. This means there is less capital available to absorb trades without causing sharp price fluctuations, amplifying day-to-day volatility.

Analysts caution that this trend has been developing gradually and may persist, keeping price action erratic despite occasional rebounds.

Macroeconomic Pressures Add to Stress

Bitcoin’s weakness has mirrored broader sell-offs across risk assets, particularly technology stocks and speculative investments. Investor sentiment has been weighed down by uncertainty over the future path of U.S. interest rates and concerns that elevated equity valuations may not be sustainable.

Markets reacted sharply after signals that U.S. monetary policy could remain tighter for longer than previously expected. Higher interest rates typically reduce the appeal of non-yielding assets such as cryptocurrencies.

In recent weeks, precious metals and digital assets have also faced pressure as investors reassess portfolio allocations amid shifting global economic signals.

The Trump Effect on Crypto Markets

Bitcoin surged sharply following Donald Trump’s election victory in late 2024, driven by expectations that his administration would pursue a more favourable regulatory stance toward digital assets.

During the campaign, Trump pledged support for cryptocurrency innovation and raised the prospect of creating a strategic Bitcoin reserve. These signals fuelled optimism among investors, sending Bitcoin to record highs in late 2025.

However, analysts note that while the administration has taken steps to reshape digital asset regulation, expectations of aggressive government-led Bitcoin accumulation have not materialised, dampening speculative enthusiasm.

Policy Shifts Fail to Halt Decline

Despite regulatory clarity improving in parts of the U.S. financial system, crypto prices have struggled to maintain momentum. New frameworks for digital asset oversight and stablecoin regulation have reduced uncertainty but have not been enough to counter broader macroeconomic headwinds.

Market participants say early optimism around policy reforms may have been priced in too quickly, leaving prices vulnerable once liquidity conditions tightened.

Bitcoin’s recent dip below levels seen before Trump’s election has prompted debate over whether the rally was driven more by speculative excess than long-term fundamentals.

Whale Activity and Market Sentiment

Some analysts suggest the pace of selling by large Bitcoin holders, commonly referred to as “whales,” has slowed in recent sessions. This could indicate that major investors are becoming less inclined to offload holdings at current prices.

However, others warn that reduced selling pressure alone may not be enough to stabilise the market if broader liquidity conditions continue to deteriorate.

Investor sentiment remains fragile, with traders closely watching price levels for signs of either a durable bottom or further breakdown.

Closer Ties to Traditional Markets

Bitcoin has become increasingly correlated with traditional financial markets during periods of stress, according to market observers. This growing linkage means that global economic developments now have a stronger influence on cryptocurrency prices.

As institutional participation in crypto markets has expanded, digital assets have become more sensitive to shifts in equity markets, bond yields and geopolitical developments.

Experts say this evolution challenges the long-held perception of Bitcoin as a hedge against traditional financial volatility.

Outlook Remains Uncertain

While some investors view the recent correction as a potential buying opportunity, others remain cautious amid the lack of clear bullish signals.

Analysts broadly agree that Bitcoin’s near-term direction will depend on improvements in market liquidity, clarity on global monetary policy and renewed investor confidence in risk assets.

Until then, heightened volatility is likely to remain a defining feature of the crypto market landscape.

For Indian investors, experts advise close monitoring of global cues and regulatory developments before making significant exposure decisions.
