Cabinet Approves Pune Metro Phase-2 Lines 4 & 4A

RR Team, November 27, 2025November 27, 2025
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved Lines 4 and 4A under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. Line 4 will run from Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla, while Line 4A connects Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug. This follows the earlier approval of Lines 2A and 2B, marking Phase-2 as a major step forward in Pune’s urban mobility plan.

Together spanning 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations, Lines 4 and 4A will link IT hubs, commercial zones, educational institutions, and residential neighborhoods across East, South, and West Pune. The project is estimated at Rs. 9,857.85 crore, jointly funded by the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and international bilateral/multilateral agencies. Completion is targeted within five years.

These corridors are integral to Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and will integrate seamlessly with operational Lines 1 and 2 at key points like Kharadi Bypass, Nal Stop, and Swargate. An interchange at Hadapsar Railway Station will further enhance multimodal connectivity, linking metro, rail, and bus networks efficiently.

Traversing strategic routes including Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, these metro lines aim to decongest busy city roads, enhance safety, and promote sustainable, green mobility. Line 4 will connect Pune’s IT and industrial hubs to scenic and residential areas, while Line 4A serves growing suburban neighborhoods.

Ridership projections are significant: combined daily ridership is expected to reach 4.09 lakh in 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and over 11.7 lakh by 2058. Specifically, Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor will grow from 3.23 lakh to 9.33 lakh passengers, while Nal Stop Warje Manik Baug will increase from 85,555 to 2.41 lakh over the same period.

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will execute the project, handling all civil, electrical, mechanical, and system works. Pre-construction activities, including surveys and detailed design, are already in progress.

With Lines 4 and 4A, Pune Metro’s network will surpass the 100 km milestone, bringing the city closer to a modern, integrated, and sustainable urban transit system. These lines promise faster, greener, and more connected commuting options, reducing travel time, traffic congestion, and environmental impact while shaping Pune’s future urban growth.
