Chamoli Cloudburst: 1 Dead, 9 Missing as Rescue Ops Continue

RR Team, September 18, 2025September 18, 2025
One person has died and nine others remain missing after a cloudburst and heavy rainfall triggered a landslide in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Thursday. Several houses in the Nandanagar area were buried under debris, prompting urgent search and rescue operations by local authorities.

Rescue Operations Underway

According to officials, 12 people were initially reported missing in the early hours of the disaster. So far, one body has been recovered and two survivors have been pulled out safely after rigorous efforts by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police teams. The search for the remaining missing persons continues amid challenging weather conditions.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed that relief and rescue teams reached the site immediately after reports of the collapse surfaced. He assured that all necessary resources are being mobilised to assist those affected.

Authorities on High Alert

The Chamoli district administration, along with disaster management officials, has set up emergency shelters for displaced families. Medical teams have also been deployed to provide first aid and critical care where needed.

The SDRF reported that heavy rains had loosened soil and rock in the hilly terrain, causing a sudden landslide that buried several residential structures. Continuous rainfall is making excavation and rescue more difficult.

Recurring Threat in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is prone to cloudbursts and landslides, especially during the monsoon season. In recent years, Chamoli and surrounding districts have witnessed multiple incidents of flash floods and slope collapses, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to climate-driven extreme weather.

Experts have long warned that rapid construction, deforestation, and fragile Himalayan geology increase disaster risks in the state. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and follow advisories in the coming days, as more rainfall is forecast for the region.

Government Response

Chief Minister Dhami expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured financial assistance to those affected. He added that the government will review the disaster preparedness plan for Chamoli and nearby districts to prevent similar tragedies.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in isolated pockets of Uttarakhand for the next 48 hours, raising further concerns of landslides in vulnerable areas. District authorities have issued warnings and asked residents in landslide-prone zones to shift to safer locations.

Way Forward

While immediate focus remains on rescue operations, experts stress the need for long-term measures such as stricter land-use regulations, early warning systems, and sustainable development planning in the Himalayan belt.

More updates on the rescue efforts and the condition of missing persons are expected later today as operations continue.
