Chinmoy Das Arrested: Bangladesh Court Petition Seeks ISKCON Ban Amid Hindu Attacks

RR Team, November 27, 2024November 27, 2024

On Wednesday, a petition was filed with the Bangladesh High Court, calling for a ban on ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) amidst growing attacks on the Hindu community. The petition also urges the government to declare a state of emergency in Chittagong and Rangpur, where protests have led to violent unrest.

The court asked the Bangladesh government to respond by Thursday regarding the recent activities of ISKCON. The petition highlighted concerns about the safety of religious minorities in the country, especially in the wake of protests and violence that have gripped multiple cities.

Hindu Monk’s Arrest Sparks Protests

The unrest began after the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu on November 25 at Dhaka airport. Prabhu, an advocate for the rights of religious minorities, was charged with sedition and denied bail. His arrest led to protests across Bangladesh, with demonstrators demanding his release. In Chittagong, protests turned violent, resulting in the death of a lawyer and over 20 injuries.

Prabhu had previously organized protests highlighting violence against Hindus in Bangladesh and had called for stronger protections for the community. His arrest has sparked fears among religious minorities, who believe the charges are meant to silence dissent.

ISKCON Calls for Global Intervention

In response to the arrest, ISKCON condemned the action and called for international support. An ISKCON spokesperson said, “The UN must intervene to protect minorities in Bangladesh. The ongoing persecution is unacceptable.

India Expresses Concern

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed “deep concern” over the situation, citing multiple recent attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. The ministry condemned the violence against peaceful Hindu protests, as well as reports of arson, looting, and vandalism targeting Hindu homes and temples.

The MEA urged Bangladesh’s government to ensure the safety and security of religious minorities, emphasizing their right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

Bangladesh Responds to India’s Statement

In response, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized India’s statement, calling it an interference in Bangladesh’s internal affairs. Bangladesh also accused India of misrepresenting the facts surrounding Prabhu’s arrest and undermining the harmony between the two nations.

Despite tensions, Bangladesh emphasized its commitment to maintaining peace and interfaith harmony among its people.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the Bangladesh High Court and the government’s response to the growing concerns over the safety of Hindu minorities in the country.
