Connectivity as a Growth Engine
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, addressing the inaugural session, said improved transportation links are critical for the development of the North East. He credited the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Centre’s UDAN scheme for turning the long-standing dream of airports in Arunachal into a reality. According to him, aviation development has significantly raised socio-economic aspirations across the region.
Union Minister for Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu emphasized deeper collaboration between the Centre, states, and industry players. “Enhanced air connectivity is vital for tourism, logistics, and employment in the North East,” he said, adding that aviation must become a driver of inclusive growth.
Rapid Growth in Aviation Infrastructure
Naidu highlighted that the number of operational airports in the North East has grown from nine in 2014 to 16 today. Aircraft movements have nearly doubled, and domestic passenger traffic has more than tripled in the same period. The Minister noted that aviation is no longer a luxury but a “critical enabler of Viksit Bharat @2047.”
He also announced that the Centre will offer four free pre-feasibility studies for Greenfield airport development every financial year in the North East, encouraging states to plan and expand infrastructure.
Tourism and Employment Opportunities
“You have not seen India until you have seen North East India,” Naidu remarked, urging states to capitalize on the region’s rich culture, natural beauty, and warm hospitality. He stressed the need for skilling initiatives to generate local employment in the aviation and tourism sectors.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma echoed this sentiment, noting that aviation growth is key to bridging geographical barriers, linking remote communities, and integrating local economies with national and international markets.
States’ Perspectives on Development
Arunachal Pradesh’s Civil Aviation Minister Balo Raja underlined the importance of regional air cargo facilities for exporting horticultural produce and handicrafts. Sikkim’s Tourism and Aviation Minister Tshering Bhutia called for full-scale operationalisation of Pakyong Airport, while Assam’s Minister Jogen Mohan praised the Ministry’s efforts in engaging with states for policy reforms.
Industry Participation and Next Steps
Over 70 industry stakeholders, including airlines, helicopter operators, cargo players, and drone companies, participated in the summit. Officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Airports Authority of India presented models for airport development, helicopter emergency services, and aviation skilling programs.
The conference also highlighted India’s upcoming flagship aviation event, Wings India 2026, scheduled for January in Hyderabad, which will showcase opportunities in the civil aviation sector.
Infrastructure Upgrades in Arunachal
Earlier in the day, the Union Minister and Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the new terminal at Donyi Polo Airport. Built over 4,100 sq m, the facility will handle one million passengers annually. The Minister also launched a UDAN café, a crèche for toddlers, and an AVSAR shop to promote artisans of the region. An Indigo flight to Delhi marked the operational start of the terminal.
