Court Orders FIR Against Madhya Pradesh Minister for Sexist Remarks on Army Officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi

RR Team, May 14, 2025May 14, 2025

A deeply troubling incident has unfolded in Madhya Pradesh, where Minister Vijay Shah is now facing legal action over his controversial remarks about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a decorated officer of the Indian Army. The Madhya Pradesh High Court, taking suo motu cognizance of the minister’s statements, has directed the state police chief to register a First Information Report (FIR) against him. This comes amid nationwide outrage over the derogatory, communal, and sexist nature of his comments.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, has played a key role in briefing the media during Operation Sindoor, emerging as a strong symbol of courage and leadership. The remarks made by Minister Shah during a public event in Mhow sought to politicize and communalize their service, raising serious concerns about the dignity and respect owed to those in uniform—regardless of their gender, religion, or background.

At the event, which was attended by several senior BJP leaders, Shah used deeply offensive language that many felt demeaned not only Colonel Qureshi but also women and members of minority communities at large. His statement, implying revenge through the identity of a soldier rather than honouring her for her bravery, has sparked a political and moral firestorm. Several army veterans, women’s rights activists, and opposition leaders have strongly condemned the minister’s speech, calling it disgraceful and unbefitting of a public servant.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has demanded the immediate removal of Shah from his ministerial post, stating that such divisive and sexist rhetoric has no place in a democracy that values secularism and gender equality.

In the face of backlash, Vijay Shah initially claimed that his words had been taken out of context. However, as criticism mounted, he issued an apology, stating, “Colonel Sofiya Qureshi is more important than my sister to me because she rose above caste and community and took revenge. I did not intend any offence. Still, if anyone felt bad, I apologise not once but ten times.”

Even as he offered this public apology, many continue to question the sincerity of his words and whether mere contrition is enough in the face of such a serious breach of public trust. Colonel Sofiya Qureshi has served her country with distinction, and such comments risk undermining the spirit of unity and respect that the armed forces embody.

This incident is a reminder of the urgent need for greater sensitivity and accountability in public discourse, especially when it concerns the brave individuals who put their lives on the line for the nation. As the legal process unfolds, citizens across the country await justice—not just for Colonel Qureshi, but for the values of dignity and inclusivity that India strives to uphold.
