Cuddalore Train Hits School Van, 2 Students Killed

RR Team, July 8, 2025July 8, 2025

Cuddalore Train Tragedy: 2 Students Killed as Van Hit at Open Railway Crossing

Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu: A heartbreaking accident shook the quiet town of Semmankuppam on Tuesday morning. A speeding passenger train from Villupuram to Mayiladuthurai rammed into a private school van at an unmanned level crossing, killing two innocent students on the spot.

What Happened at the Crossing

The tragic incident occurred at 7:45 AM. The school van, carrying four students, attempted to cross the railway line despite an approaching train. The impact was devastating. The van was dragged over 50 metres along the tracks, leaving it in mangled pieces.

Two students — Charumathi (15) and Venkatesh (10) — died on the spot. The remaining two students and the van’s driver, identified as Sankar (45), sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to the Cuddalore Government General Hospital by local villagers who arrived before official help could reach.

Locals Blame Gatekeeper’s Negligence

Eyewitnesses and villagers are furious. They allege that the level crossing gatekeeper, Pankaj Sharma, was asleep during duty hours and failed to close the barrier in time. Some villagers, in a fit of rage, reportedly assaulted Sharma.

However, Sharma has denied the allegations. He claims the van driver insisted on passing through even though he warned him of the train’s approach.

Railways Responds with Suspension

The Southern Railway wasted no time in initiating action. Pankaj Sharma has been suspended pending an inquiry. An official investigation is now underway to determine whether it was gatekeeper negligence, reckless driving, or both that caused the fatal mishap.

Police Begin Probe

Cuddalore Superintendent of Police S Jeyakumar confirmed that a detailed investigation is in progress. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage, questioning witnesses, and gathering data to understand what truly happened and who should be held accountable.

Recurring Pattern of Railway Accidents

This accident is not an isolated incident. According to the Ministry of Railways, India recorded over 1,000 railway crossing accidents in the past five years. A significant number of them involve unmanned or poorly supervised gates.

In Tamil Nadu alone, there have been several such mishaps in recent years, raising serious concerns about the safety protocols at railway crossings, especially those used frequently by school vans and rural commuters.

Parents and Locals Demand Accountability

Following the accident, hundreds of villagers gathered near the site. Many demanded stronger action from railway authorities and the local government. “How many children need to die before safety becomes a priority?” one grieving parent cried out.

Parents called for the installation of automated barriers and alarms at all major crossings, especially near schools. Some even suggested that GPS-based alert systems be installed in school vehicles to warn of nearby trains.

Preventable Tragedy?

Trains run on schedules. School vans operate on routine timings. This tragic accident could have been prevented with better coordination and stricter enforcement of crossing rules. Whether human error, negligence, or system failure — the loss of two young lives is a blow that Cuddalore won’t forget anytime soon.

Moving Forward: What Needs to Change?

  • Strict enforcement of barrier protocols at railway crossings
  • Training for van drivers on railway safety
  • Installation of automated warning systems
  • Deployment of CCTV and live monitoring at high-risk crossings

This accident must serve as a wake-up call. Lives, especially of children, cannot be left to chance or carelessness. Safety must come before convenience, and accountability must follow every tragedy.
