Dalai Lama Wins First Grammy at 90 for Spoken-Word Album

RR Team, February 2, 2026February 2, 2026
In a historic moment that blends spirituality, music and global recognition, Tibetan spiritual leader the 14th Dalai Lama has won his first Grammy Award at the age of 90. The prestigious honour came at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles, where his spoken-word album was declared the winner in the category of Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording.
The album, titled Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, stands out for its unique fusion of spiritual discourse and Indian classical music. It marks the Dalai Lama’s debut Grammy win and places him among first-time winners at this year’s ceremony.

A Unique Musical and Spiritual Collaboration

The album is a collaborative effort with renowned sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan and his sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash. Their classical compositions accompany the Dalai Lama’s recorded reflections, creating a contemplative listening experience rooted in peace, compassion and hope.

Drawing from decades of public talks and teachings, the spoken-word segments focus on universal values such as kindness, environmental responsibility and the oneness of humanity. The musical arrangements provide a meditative framework that enhances the spiritual essence of the narration.

Recognition on a Global Stage

The Dalai Lama’s album emerged victorious in a competitive category that included notable nominees such as US Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, comedian Trevor Noah, author Kathy Garver and musician Fab Morvan. The recognition reflects the growing global appetite for content that transcends entertainment and speaks to deeper human values.

Musician Rufus Wainwright accepted the Grammy on behalf of the Dalai Lama at the ceremony. The spiritual leader did not attend the event in person.

Dalai Lama’s Message After the Win

Reacting to the honour, the Dalai Lama expressed gratitude while emphasising that the award was not a personal achievement. He described it as a recognition of humanity’s shared responsibility towards peace and coexistence.

He noted that compassion, care for the environment and an understanding of humanity’s interconnectedness are essential for the well-being of all people. The Grammy recognition, he said, offers a wider platform to spread these messages globally.

Artists Reflect on the Collaboration

Amjad Ali Khan described the project as deeply personal and spiritually enriching. He said the album allowed the artists to translate the Dalai Lama’s timeless teachings into a musical language that encourages stillness and reflection.

According to officials from the Dalai Lama’s office, the album carefully curates key messages from his past discourses, ensuring authenticity while presenting them in an accessible contemporary format.

A New Chapter in a Remarkable Legacy

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, is already a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and one of the world’s most respected spiritual figures. The Grammy adds a new dimension to his legacy, highlighting the power of spoken word and music as tools for social and moral reflection.

The album was produced with the involvement of Glassnote Records and includes contributions from artists across cultures and traditions, reinforcing its universal appeal.

As India continues to play a central role in preserving Tibetan culture and spiritual traditions, the Grammy win has been widely celebrated by Indian musicians and cultural observers. It underscores the global relevance of Indian classical music when combined with meaningful narratives.

For millions of followers worldwide, the Dalai Lama’s Grammy win is more than an artistic achievement. It is a reminder that messages of peace and compassion can resonate even in the world’s most competitive cultural arenas.
