Delhi Braces for Rain and Thunderstorms This Week

RR Team, July 28, 2025July 28, 2025
New Delhi, July 28, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh alert for thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in Delhi and NCR areas, including Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.

Heavy Rainfall Predicted Across NCR

According to the IMD bulletin released on July 27, Delhi will see generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning on July 28 and 29.

Temperatures are expected to drop slightly, bringing relief from the heat. The maximum temperature will range between 33–35°C, while the minimum is expected to stay between 26–28°C on Monday.

By Tuesday, July 29, temperatures may fall further, with maximums between 29–31°C and minimums around 23–25°C, said the IMD.

Commuters Face Challenges Amid Waterlogging

Photos and videos of waterlogged roads in key areas of Delhi surfaced online on Sunday. Officegoers and commuters were seen wading through ankle-deep water. Local residents reported traffic jams and delays due to poor drainage and continued showers.

Steady Rain Till July 31; No Heatwave Ahead

Rain is expected to continue in Delhi till July 31, the weather department stated. The monsoon pattern is likely to stabilize with light rains and thunder at intervals throughout the week. No signs of a heatwave have been forecast.

This extended spell is part of a broader monsoon system impacting large parts of North and Northeast India.

Weather Alerts in Other States

Meanwhile, the IMD has also warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Northeast, especially in Assam and adjoining states. A fresh bout of rain is likely between August 1 and 3 in this region.

In Rajasthan, isolated areas may witness extremely heavy rainfall on Monday. Moderate to very heavy showers are expected to follow till July 31.

Extremely heavy rains have already been recorded in parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Ghat areas in these states received over 21 cm of rain in a single day.

Delhi’s Weekend Weather Recap

On Sunday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 37.5°C, which was 2.6°C above the seasonal average. The minimum was 28.8°C—1.5°C higher than normal. These unusually high readings reflect the hot and humid conditions prior to the monsoon showers.

What Residents Should Do

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during peak rain hours.
  • Use public transport wherever possible to reduce traffic congestion.
  • Carry rain gear like umbrellas and waterproof footwear.
  • Stay indoors during lightning or thunder alerts issued by IMD.

The IMD also recommends that people keep a close eye on weather alerts via official sources like the Mausam IMD website or the IMD Twitter handle.

Relief for Delhiites After Scorching Heat

This upcoming rainy spell brings much-needed relief to Delhiites who have been dealing with high temperatures and humidity. While the rains may cause temporary disruptions, they are crucial in maintaining groundwater levels and providing respite from urban heat.

For now, Delhi residents should brace themselves for continued rain, cloudy skies, and lower daytime temperatures through the week.
