ECI Trains Record Batch of 373 Grassroots Officials to Strengthen Democratic Processes

RR Team, May 29, 2025May 29, 2025

The Election Commission of India has begun training a large group of grassroots election workers from four states, underscoring its ongoing commitment to ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections. Today, the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi welcomed the eighth batch of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), BLO Supervisors, and Electoral Registration Officers from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. With 373 participants—the largest batch so far—this initiative reflects the Election Commission’s deep respect for the crucial role these field officials play in the democratic process.

Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar addressed the group, highlighting the importance of rigorous training to uphold the laws governing elections in India. He emphasized that these programs are vital to ensure strict adherence to the Representation of People Act and related rules, which safeguard the electoral process. Shri Kumar also stressed the significance of familiarizing participants with procedures for handling appeals related to electoral rolls, encouraging election workers to educate voters about their rights during field verifications.

It is noteworthy that no appeals were filed from the four states following the Special Summary Revision exercise earlier this year, an encouraging sign of the smooth conduct of the voter registration process. This reflects the hard work and diligence of election functionaries at every level.

The training sessions are designed to be highly practical, covering essential tasks such as voter registration, handling forms, and implementing electoral procedures at the grassroots level. In addition to classroom learning, the participants will gain hands-on experience with election technology, including demonstrations and mock polls using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs). This practical exposure is crucial in building confidence among election officials and ensuring that they are well-prepared to serve their communities.

The Election Commission’s efforts to train over 3,700 field officials in recent months showcase a sincere dedication to strengthening India’s democratic fabric. By equipping these frontline workers with the necessary knowledge and skills, the Commission is fostering a more inclusive and participatory electoral process. This initiative not only honors the responsibilities entrusted to these officials but also recognizes the essential connection they create between the government and the people it serves.
