Election Commission of India Reviews Tamil Nadu Poll Preparedness

RR Team, February 26, 2026February 26, 2026
The Election Commission of India (ECI) conducted a comprehensive review of poll preparedness in Tamil Nadu ahead of the forthcoming Legislative Assembly Elections. Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, led the high-level meetings in Chennai on Wednesday.

Interaction with Political Parties

As part of the review process, the Commission held detailed interactions with representatives of recognised national and state political parties. These included Aam Aadmi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Indian National Congress, National People’s Party, AIADMK, DMDK, DMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi.

During the discussions, most political parties appreciated the smooth conduct of the recent Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls in the state. They acknowledged the Commission’s efforts in maintaining transparency and updating voter lists effectively.

However, several parties urged the ECI to take stricter action against the use of money power and distribution of freebies during elections. Some representatives recommended increasing the number of flying squads to monitor and prevent election-related malpractices.

Concerns Over Festival Dates

Political parties also requested that the Commission take into account the schedule of upcoming festivals while finalising the election dates. They stressed that polling schedules should avoid major cultural and religious events to ensure maximum voter participation.

Responding to these suggestions, Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar assured all parties that their concerns would be carefully examined. He reiterated that elections are conducted strictly in accordance with the law and in a free, fair and transparent manner.

Review with Enforcement Agencies and Officials

Following the interaction with political parties, the Commission conducted an extensive review meeting with senior officials, including Heads and Nodal Officers of Enforcement Agencies, Inspector Generals, Deputy Inspector Generals, District Election Officers (DEOs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs).

The review covered all key aspects of election planning such as EVM management, logistics, staff training, law and order arrangements, seizures, voter awareness campaigns and outreach initiatives.

Strict Action Against Inducements

The Commission directed enforcement agencies to function with complete impartiality and firmly clamp down on any inducement-related activities. Officials were instructed to ensure that there is no misuse of money or distribution of gifts intended to influence voters.

Zero tolerance was emphasised towards any deviation from electoral laws, rules and established procedures. The Commission made it clear that all officers must act without fear or favour while discharging their responsibilities.

Focus on Voter Comfort and Accessibility

The Commission also instructed District Election Officers and Superintendents of Police to prioritise voter comfort at polling stations. Ensuring accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and first-time voters was highlighted as a key focus area.

Officials were directed to provide robust training to polling personnel and expand awareness about electoral processes. The aim is to strengthen public confidence and encourage greater voter participation across the state.

Commitment to Free and Fair Elections

The Election Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting transparent and credible elections in Tamil Nadu. With extensive ground-level reviews and coordination among enforcement agencies, the Commission signalled preparedness to ensure a level playing field for all stakeholders.

The high-level review in Chennai marks a crucial step in the run-up to the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, reinforcing the Commission’s resolve to uphold democratic principles and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
