Plastic Out, Fabric In: India’s Bold Push to End Plastic Pollution on World Environment Day

New Delhi, June 5, 2025 – India marked World Environment Day 2025 with the impactful nationwide campaign “Plastic Out, Fabric In”, aligning with this year’s global theme: “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.” The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), under the Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban 2.0, led a five-day movement (June 1–5) to eliminate single-use plastic (SUP) and promote sustainable alternatives.

More than 2,400 kiosks were set up across urban India under the Plastic Out, Fabric In banner. Volunteers at these kiosks distributed over 3 lakh cloth bags to encourage plastic-free shopping and everyday use.

🚫 Plastic Pollution: A National Crisis

Plastic waste, especially single-use plastic, harms both urban ecosystems and public health. It makes up 46% of dry waste in Indian cities.

India acted early, banning thin plastic bags in 1999 and later prohibiting most single-use plastic items in July 2022.

The current SBM-U 2.0 campaign campaign focuses on:

  • Waste segregation

  • Reducing plastic waste

  • Promoting eco-friendly packaging

💪 Impactful Ground Campaigns Across India

🧵 Thaila Banks Empower Women and Communities

In Mira Bhayandar, women self-help groups (SHGs) stitched reusable bags from discarded clothes at RRR Centres, operating a local “Thaila Bank.”

Chhattisgarh’s Gurur Shiv Shakti SHG set up a “Didi Jhola Bank” at the local bus stand, giving out sturdy, cloth-based alternatives.

🚴 Clean Living on Two Wheels

In Pimpri Chinchwad, a massive cycling rally promoted SUP-free living. It ended with participants taking a green pledge to avoid plastic.

Lucknow saw over 10,000 volunteers join a major Gomti River cleanup, removing plastic and restoring the riverbanks.

🛍️ Recycling Events Drive Mindset Shift

In Indore, the “RRR Slum Haat” initiative distributed items made from recycled material in Ramabai Basti, while also encouraging local vendors to quit plastic.

NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) hosted a Recycle Mela, showcasing:

  • Waste collection e-carts

  • Wet-cleaning trolleys

  • Plastic-Free Shop sticker adoption

  • Public green pledges

In Jamshedpur, a Plog Run collected over 300 kg of plastic waste, which was sent to the local Plastic Waste Management Unit for recycling.

🎤 Voices Behind the “Plastic Out, Fabric In” Movement

The 10th edition of Swachh Talks featured:

  • Pradeep Sangwan, Healing Himalayas – who spoke about plastic waste destroying mountain regions.

  • Sagnik Mukherjee, Pepcom India – who explained how eco-friendly packaging can replace plastic.

  • Tamil Nadu’s Manjappai Campaign – a successful state initiative promoting yellow cloth bags through the 3R model.

🙌 Grassroots Action + Government Push

In Raipur, Deputy CM Arun Sao launched a city-wide plastic-free campaign.

In Anantnag, sanitation workers collected single-use plastic waste from homes under the “Plastic Bhiksha” program, sending the waste to RRR Centres for safe disposal.

🇮🇳 India’s Green Resolve Grows Stronger

The success of “Plastic Out, Fabric In” proves India’s readiness to shift away from plastic. From distributing cloth bags to collecting waste and spreading awareness, citizens and leaders are working hand-in-hand toward a plastic-free, sustainable future.
