Golden Temple Ablution Row Sparks Online Debate

RR Team, January 17, 2026January 18, 2026
Amritsar’s Golden Temple has become the center of a fresh controversy after a viral video showed a Muslim man using the sarovar (holy pond) water for wazu, the Islamic pre-prayer ablution. The incident has sparked heated discussions online and offline regarding religious protocols and the sanctity of Sikh holy sites.

Online Backlash and Public Debate

The video, shared widely on X and other social media platforms, drew criticism from a large number of users. Many called the act disrespectful, claiming the man had “dirtied” the sacred water by blowing his nose and cleansing himself. Others suggested that he acted with devotion, though unaware of the Sikh code of conduct.

Understanding Wazu and Gurdwara Protocol

Wazu is typically performed using running water or in areas with proper drainage. In contrast, the sarovar at the Golden Temple contains stagnant water, primarily meant for ceremonial bathing. The gurdwara also provides separate facilities with running water for washing hands and feet before entering the premises, ensuring adherence to Sikh customs.

SGPC Response and Investigation

Kulwant Singh Manan, Chief Secretary of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), commented on the incident, noting that while Sikh and Hindu communities are familiar with the maryada (code of conduct), visitors from other faiths sometimes make mistakes. He confirmed that the SGPC is investigating the video and has held meetings on similar past issues.

Manan also highlighted recurring concerns over visitors treating the Golden Temple as a tourist attraction and making videos for social media, which occasionally disregards the sanctity of the site.

Historical Context and Interfaith Sensitivity

Similar incidents have occurred at the Golden Temple in the past, prompting SGPC to stress the importance of following religious guidelines. Experts note that interfaith visits require awareness of local practices to maintain mutual respect. Videos also show the same man praising Sikhism for its welcoming nature, highlighting a mix of reverence and misunderstanding in such situations.

Looking Ahead

The Golden Temple continues to be a symbol of spirituality and inclusivity in Punjab. Authorities urge visitors to respect the maryada and use designated facilities for cleansing rituals. The SGPC’s proactive monitoring is aimed at balancing openness with preservation of sanctity.
