Govardhan Puja 2024: Krishna’s Legendary Feat of Lifting Govardhan to Protect Braj

RR Team, November 2, 2024November 2, 2024

As the Diwali festivities wrap up, we look forward to Govardhan Puja, or Annakut Puja, celebrated this year on November 2, 2024. This festival commemorates Lord Krishna’s remarkable encounter with Lord Indra, the rain god, and his victory over Indra’s pride-fueled storms. Here’s a look into the story, significance, and rituals that make Govardhan Puja a memorable celebration.

Why Govardhan Puja is Celebrated

In the village of Braj, the people traditionally worshipped Indra to show gratitude for rain, which was crucial for their crops. However, young Krishna, wise beyond his years, urged them to redirect their worship toward nature and the earth, symbolized by the Govardhan Hill, instead of Indra, who was powerful but often prideful.

The villagers heeded Krishna’s advice and ceased their offerings to Indra. Enraged, Indra retaliated by sending a fierce storm, hoping to punish the villagers. Determined to protect his community, Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill on his little finger, providing shelter for the people and animals of Braj. After seven days of relentless rain, Indra conceded defeat, and from that day, Govardhan Puja became a celebration of resilience, community, and Krishna’s divine strength.

Key Timings for Govardhan Puja 2024

The Pratipada Tithi for Govardhan Puja starts at 6:16 PM on November 1 and concludes at 8:21 PM on November 2. The most auspicious time for morning prayers is from 6:14 AM to 8:33 AM, and in the evening from 3:33 PM to 5:53 PM on November 2. Observing the puja during these hours is believed to enhance the positive energies and Krishna’s blessings.

Govardhan Puja Rituals

The day begins with a sacred bath, followed by creating a mound from cow dung that represents Govardhan Hill. This honors the earth, which Krishna advocated for, and reminds devotees of his deep connection with nature. Devotees then perform a parikrama (circumambulation) around this symbolic hill, praising Krishna and retelling the story of his miraculous feat.

The highlight of Govardhan Puja is the Annakut feast, where devotees prepare an array of food in the shape of a mountain to symbolize Govardhan Hill. This lavish spread of sweets, savories, and various dishes represents nature’s abundance and Krishna’s love for food. The food is first offered to Krishna and then distributed as prasad believed to bring blessings of prosperity and happiness.

Celebrating Krishna’s Teachings

Govardhan Puja isn’t only about honoring Krishna; it’s a reminder of his teachings on nature, humility, and the power of community. His victory over Indra teaches us the importance of staying grounded and respecting the natural world—an enduring message relevant even today.

This Govardhan Puja, let Krishna’s spirit inspire you to lift your world, even with a small act of positivity and community spirit.
