GSI Charts 2026-27 Path for Mineral Exploration

RR Team, January 21, 2026January 21, 2026
New Delhi: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) presented its Annual Exploration Action Plan for Field Season 2026-27 at the 65th Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting. The event, inaugurated by Shri Piyush Goyal, Secretary, Ministry of Mines, focused on advancing critical mineral exploration, geoinformatics, and sustainable geoscientific research to strengthen India’s mineral security.

Comprehensive Plan for Strategic Minerals

The GSI’s Annual Programme for 2026-27 comprises 1,068 scientific projects, with around 55% dedicated to mineral exploration. A notable emphasis has been placed on critical and strategic minerals, with 236 targeted projects. Additionally, 37 projects are planned in international border regions to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Shri Piyush Goyal emphasized a coordinated approach, urging all exploration agencies, including GSI, MECL, and State DGMs, to fast-track operations and adopt continuous rolling approvals to optimize field outcomes.

Technological Innovation and Geoinformatics

GSI is leveraging AI-enabled tools, geospatial platforms, and legacy data integration to enhance exploration efficiency. A total of 58 projects in Geoinformatics and Data Analysis will focus on geospatial data generation, integration, analysis, dissemination, and management. These efforts aim to modernize exploration, strengthen decision-making, and support India’s energy transition and resource security goals.

Natural Hazards, Public Good Science, and Capacity Building

Beyond mineral exploration, GSI has outlined 144 projects under Natural Hazard Studies, Fundamental Geoscience, and Public Good Geoscience. These include landslide and geotechnical investigations, polar and glaciological research, climate change studies, and environmental monitoring.

Further, 160 training programmes are planned to enhance the skills of GSI personnel and stakeholders from central institutions, state governments, PSUs, private industry, and academia, reinforcing the country’s geoscientific capabilities.

Policy and Collaboration for Mineral Security

During the meeting, Shri Sanjay Lohiya, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Mines, highlighted the importance of using the National Geoscience Data Repository (NGDR) to avoid duplication and encouraged stakeholders to implement the newly formulated Policy for recovery of critical and strategic minerals from ongoing projects, mine dumps, tailings, and overburdens.

The CGPB meeting also featured discussions on emerging exploration topics, including critical mineral recovery, identification at exploration stage, and sub-surface data management. An exhibition of strategic and critical mineral initiatives showcased technological achievements and innovation by GSI, PSUs, private agencies, and startups.

Forward-Looking Vision

The 65th CGPB meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of collective commitment towards technological innovation, collaborative action, and scientific excellence to secure India’s mineral resources. GSI’s forward-looking plan for Field Season 2026-27 aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, ensuring sustainable exploration, environmental responsibility, and strategic resource development.
