Gujarat Bridge Collapse Kills 9, Triggers Safety Audit

RR Team, July 9, 2025

Vadodara, Gujarat | July 9, 2025 — Tragedy struck early Wednesday morning as a portion of the Gambhira-Mujpur bridge collapsed, sending multiple vehicles plunging into the Mahisagar River. The incident, which occurred during peak traffic hours, has left nine people dead and several others injured.

A Morning Commute Turns Fatal

The bridge, connecting Anand and Vadodara districts, gave way suddenly, shocking commuters and locals alike. According to officials, the collapsed stretch caused four vehicles — including two trucks, a Bolero SUV, and a pickup van — to fall directly into the fast-flowing river below.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud cracking sound seconds before the bridge crumbled. “It was like an explosion,” said Ravi Patel, a local shopkeeper. “Then everything vanished into the river within seconds.”

Immediate Rescue and Relief Operations

Emergency services were quick to respond. Teams from the fire brigade, local police, and the Vadodara district administration rushed to the site. Three injured survivors were rescued and transported to nearby hospitals for urgent care.

District Collector’s office confirmed that cranes and divers were deployed immediately to retrieve submerged vehicles and search for possible survivors. Locals also participated actively, assisting rescuers in pulling out trapped victims.

Bridge’s Poor Condition Under Scrutiny

Residents say the tragedy was waiting to happen. The Gambhira bridge, a vital lifeline for traffic moving between Central Gujarat and the Saurashtra region, had reportedly shown signs of wear for years. Many had raised concerns about its safety, but no significant repairs were undertaken.

“Repeated complaints went unheard. The structure was visibly cracking. Even the railings were falling off,” said Mehul Barot, a resident of Padra taluka. “This was administrative apathy at its worst.”

MLA, Political Leaders React

Padra MLA Chaitanyasinh Zala visited the site shortly after the incident. He promised a full inquiry and compensation for the victims’ families.

Senior Congress leader Amit Chavda also condemned the collapse on social media. He urged the administration to not only intensify rescue efforts but also start a comprehensive technical inspection of bridges in Gujarat.

“This bridge is a key corridor. How can such a vital infrastructure be neglected?” he wrote.

Traffic Chaos and Alternative Routes

With the bridge now inaccessible, authorities have cordoned off the area and diverted traffic. The alternate routes, however, are already facing congestion as commuters from Bharuch, Ankleshwar, and other industrial zones try to reroute.

The Gujarat Roadways Department has assured the public that detours are being managed efficiently, and a long-term solution will be prioritized.

Safety Audit and Technical Inspection Ordered

The state government has ordered a full safety audit of all similar old bridges in Gujarat. A high-level technical team will assess the structural integrity of bridges across the Anand, Vadodara, and Bharuch districts within the next 10 days.

Officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways are also expected to visit the site later this week.

Public Anger Mounts

The tragedy has triggered outrage among citizens. Several social groups and local organizations have demanded accountability and criminal negligence charges against those responsible for maintenance lapses.

“This is not just an accident. It’s a crime born of negligence,” said Priyanka Suthar, a local activist. “We demand justice for those who lost their lives.”

Lessons for Infrastructure Governance

This incident has once again raised serious questions about bridge maintenance in India. With aging infrastructure and rising vehicle loads, safety audits and timely repairs must become non-negotiable government priorities.

The Gambhira bridge collapse is not just a local tragedy — it is a national wake-up call.

What Happens Next?

Rescue operations continue as officials look for any possible missing persons. The collapsed bridge will be thoroughly examined for forensic evidence to determine the exact cause of failure.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat government has announced an ex-gratia compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
