Heavy Snowfall Brings Life to a Standstill in Kashmir, Hundreds Stranded on Key Highway

RR Team, December 28, 2024December 28, 2024

Srinagar, Dec 28: Unseasonably heavy snowfall disrupted normal life across the Kashmir Valley on Friday and Saturday, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, particularly between the Pir Panjal tunnel and Srinagar.

Contrary to earlier forecasts predicting light snowfall in isolated areas, the Valley experienced a relentless snowstorm beginning Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday morning.

Traffic Chaos on the National Highway

The heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures created treacherous conditions on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. Vehicles were immobilized for hours, with snow accumulating on the road and freezing solid. Many vehicles, including heavy trucks and smaller cars, skidded off course as drivers struggled to navigate the hazardous stretch.

Authorities deployed snow clearance teams and machinery in districts like Kulgam and Anantnag to aid stranded travelers. Despite these efforts, by Saturday morning, traffic movement on the highway remained severely restricted.

Disruptions Across the Valley

The snowfall also paralyzed road networks within Srinagar and other districts, including Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Pulwama, and Shopian. Snow clearance operations were underway across these areas, but progress was slow due to the intensity of the storm.

Electricity supply suffered heavily, with power outages reported in most areas of the Valley. Snow-laden electric poles toppled, transmission lines snapped, and grid disruptions compounded the challenges for residents.

Authorities Step In

Helplines have been established in all districts to provide assistance to those facing hardships. Senior officials from civil and police departments are actively monitoring the situation and coordinating relief measures.

A Silver Lining

While the snowfall has caused widespread disruptions, it has also brought some cheer. For locals, the precipitation breaks a prolonged dry spell, raising hopes for a productive Rabi crop. Many springs and wells that had nearly dried up are expected to rejuvenate.

Tourists, too, are relishing the season’s first snowfall. Popular destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg received around 10 inches of fresh snow, offering picture-perfect winter scenes.

Forecast

The weather office has predicted more rain and snow over the next 24 hours, urging residents and travelers to remain cautious and plan their movements accordingly.
