Hungarian Delegation Meets Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman

RR Team, February 18, 2026February 18, 2026
A Parliamentary Delegation from Hungary, led by Dr. Lajos Oláh, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary, met Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Shri Harivansh in Parliament on Tuesday. The meeting highlighted the growing parliamentary engagement between India and Hungary and reaffirmed shared commitments to democratic governance, constitutionalism, and the rule of law.

During the interaction, Shri Harivansh underscored that parliamentary exchanges form a vital pillar of bilateral relations. He noted that such engagements complement official diplomacy by promoting dialogue, consensus-building, and mutual understanding among lawmakers of both nations.

Shared Democratic Values

Recalling his visit to Hungary in March 2024, the Deputy Chairman expressed hope for continued parliamentary exchanges and institutional cooperation. He highlighted that India and Hungary established diplomatic relations in 1948 and celebrated 75 years of ties in 2023, reflecting a longstanding partnership rooted in mutual respect.

He emphasized that both countries are united by their commitment to democratic governance, constitutional principles, representative institutions, and adherence to the rule of law. The bilateral relationship, he observed, continues to evolve under the leadership of both governments.

Technology for Public Good

Highlighting India’s rapid digital transformation, Shri Harivansh stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has adopted the principle of “technology for public good.” He referred to the ongoing AI Impact Summit in New Delhi themed “Democratising AI, Bridging the AI Divide,” which focuses on making artificial intelligence inclusive and accessible.

He appreciated Hungary’s participation in the summit and suggested that both nations could collaborate further in emerging technologies. India’s experience in implementing large-scale Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) initiatives such as Aadhaar, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and DigiLocker has transformed governance and public service delivery.

Exploring AI Collaboration

The Deputy Chairman expressed interest in learning about Hungary’s initiatives in deploying artificial intelligence across governance, education, healthcare, and parliamentary processes. He proposed deeper exchanges of expertise and best practices, enabling both sides to benefit from shared experiences.

With artificial intelligence increasingly shaping global policymaking, both countries acknowledged the importance of responsible and inclusive technological advancement.

Appreciation for Operation Ganga Support

On bilateral cooperation, Shri Harivansh conveyed appreciation to the Government of Hungary for its support during Operation Ganga, India’s evacuation mission to rescue Indian nationals from Ukraine during the conflict. Hungary’s assistance facilitated the safe transit of Indian students and citizens through its territory.

The gesture was described as a testament to the trust and solidarity underpinning India Hungary relations.

Education and Capacity Building

Education and professional training emerged as another key area of collaboration. Shri Harivansh acknowledged Hungary’s participation in specialized training programs conducted under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme, a flagship initiative of India’s development partnership since 1964.

These courses, tailored for professionals in banking, auditing, and parliamentary procedures, aim to build institutional capacity and strengthen people-to-people ties. He emphasized that such exchanges deepen mutual understanding and create long-term partnerships.

Secretary-General of Rajya Sabha Shri P. C. Mody and other senior officials of the Secretariat were present during the meeting.

The interaction reaffirmed the importance of sustained parliamentary dialogue in strengthening India–Hungary relations, particularly in areas of democracy, digital innovation, education, and crisis cooperation.
