ICGS Sankalp Visits Mauritius, Boosts Maritime Cooperation

RR Team, January 17, 2026January 18, 2026
Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sankalp, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, arrived at Port Louis, Mauritius, on January 17 as part of its ongoing overseas deployment to friendly foreign countries in the Indian Ocean Region. The visit underscores India’s continued commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation, enhancing interoperability and deepening its longstanding bilateral relationship with Mauritius.

The port call forms an integral part of India’s maritime outreach aimed at promoting collective security and stability across the Indian Ocean. It reflects New Delhi’s emphasis on collaboration with island nations that play a crucial role in regional maritime safety and economic activity.

Aligned with India’s SAGAR Vision

The deployment of ICGS Sankalp is aligned with India’s maritime vision of SAGAR Security and Growth for All in the Region. The SAGAR framework seeks to promote regional maritime safety, security, sustainable development and environmental protection through cooperation and capacity building.

Mauritius has long been a key partner in India’s Indian Ocean strategy, and such deployments reinforce mutual trust while addressing shared maritime challenges such as illegal fishing, marine pollution and search and rescue operations.

Focus on Training and Operational Cooperation

During its stay at Port Louis, ICGS Sankalp will undertake a series of professional interactions with the National Coast Guard of Mauritius and other maritime agencies. These engagements are aimed at sharing best practices and strengthening cooperation across multiple operational domains.

A comprehensive training programme has been planned, covering both harbour-based and sea-based exercises. These include oil pollution response drills, firefighting exercises, damage control and Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defence (NBCD) drills to enhance preparedness during emergencies.

Enhancing Interoperability at Sea

The training schedule also features Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) joint exercises, navigation bridge coordination drills and Machinery Control Room integration activities. These exercises are designed to improve operational coordination and interoperability between the two maritime forces.

Such engagements contribute to building mutual understanding and operational synergy, enabling both countries to respond more effectively to maritime contingencies in the region.

Promoting Gender Inclusivity and Empowerment

Reflecting the Indian Coast Guard’s emphasis on gender inclusivity, two women officers are embarked onboard ICGS Sankalp during the deployment. Their presence highlights the expanding role of women in India’s maritime services and the country’s broader commitment to women empowerment.

The deployment serves as an example of India’s efforts to promote inclusive growth and equal opportunities within its defence and security institutions.

Cultural Exchange and Community Outreach

Beyond operational engagements, the port call will feature friendly sports fixtures and cultural exchanges between the crew of ICGS Sankalp and Mauritian counterparts. These activities are aimed at fostering camaraderie and strengthening people-to-people ties.

The crew will also participate in community service initiatives, reflecting India’s approach of constructive outreach and goodwill diplomacy during overseas deployments.

Showcasing Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The visit provides an opportunity to showcase India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities. ICGS Sankalp represents the growing self-reliance of India’s defence manufacturing sector, supporting the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Such deployments highlight the technological competence of Indian-built platforms while reinforcing confidence among partner nations in India’s maritime capabilities.

Strengthening India’s Role in the Indian Ocean

The port call of ICGS Sankalp reinforces India’s position as a reliable maritime partner in the Indian Ocean Region. It reflects the Indian Coast Guard’s commitment to maritime safety, security, environmental protection and capacity building.

Upon completion of its visit to Mauritius, ICGS Sankalp will sail for Seychelles as part of its continuing overseas deployment, further expanding India’s maritime outreach and cooperation with key island nations in the region.
