India and Canada Reset Ties After Diplomatic Strain

RR Team, October 13, 2025October 13, 2025
India and Canada have taken decisive steps to restore their bilateral relationship after tensions escalated over the 2023 assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand visited Delhi for high-level talks with her Indian counterpart S. Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, signaling a thaw in relations.

Diplomatic Engagements Resume

During her visit, Anand emphasized reviving long-term cooperation, while Jaishankar highlighted steady progress in recent months. “When we look at Canada, we see a complementary economy, diversity, and pluralism—the basis for a sustainable cooperative framework,” Jaishankar said. Anand echoed the sentiment, stressing commitment to mutual priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.

Trade and Investment Talks Restart

Both countries announced the resumption of the Canada–India CEO Forum, aimed at boosting bilateral trade and investment. Anand is also scheduled to meet India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss trade and investment opportunities, before visiting Mumbai to engage with business leaders. The measures come as India navigates a 50% tariff imposed on its goods by the United States.

Background of the Strain

Relations hit a low point in 2023 after then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in Nijjar’s killing. Delhi denied the allegations, and both countries retaliated by suspending visa services and expelling diplomats. Canada is home to nearly 1.7 million people of Indian origin, making the restoration of ties a key priority for both governments.

Recent Signs of Thaw

Earlier this year, bilateral engagement showed positive signs when Prime Minister Modi met Canadian PM Mark Carney during the G7 summit. In August, new high commissioners were appointed to each country, and Anand and Jaishankar met again at the UN General Assembly in September. These moves paved the way for Monday’s talks in Delhi.

In a joint statement, both countries stressed that reviving the partnership would strengthen economic cooperation and help mitigate vulnerabilities amid shifting global alliances. The renewed dialogue underscores the importance both nations place on sustainable economic and strategic collaboration.
