India Reviews Coal Block Progress in Five States

RR Team, August 12, 2025August 11, 2025
The Ministry of Coal has conducted a comprehensive review of captive and commercial coal block operations across Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Telangana, and Gujarat. The meeting, chaired by Additional Secretary & Nominated Authority Ms. Rupinder Brar, aimed to assess production progress, resolve operational challenges, and explore ways to accelerate coal output in these regions.Senior officials from the Central Government, state governments, and coal block allottees attended the session. Discussions focused on boosting domestic coal availability to meet the nation’s rising energy needs while reducing reliance on imports.

39 Coal Blocks Under Review

In total, 39 coal blocks were examined — 33 in Madhya Pradesh, 2 in Assam, 1 in Arunachal Pradesh, 1 in Telangana, and 2 in Gujarat. The review highlighted that Madhya Pradesh currently has 13 operational blocks, with 9 actively producing coal. Telangana’s sole coal block is also in production.

Together, these operational mines produced 34.80 million tonnes (MT) in FY 2024-25. In the current fiscal year, up to 31 July 2025, production has already reached 10.80 MT, indicating strong early performance.

Push to Fast-Track Remaining Blocks

The Ministry stressed the need to expedite the start of operations in the remaining 25 coal blocks. Faster operationalization will enhance domestic supply, cut import bills, and support India’s industrial and power generation sectors.

Officials discussed measures to address infrastructure gaps, streamline permissions, and improve supply chain coordination to ensure uninterrupted production.

Commitment to Self-Reliance

The review reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in coal production. “Our focus remains on maximizing coal output from allocated resources while ensuring sustainable and responsible mining practices,” the Ministry noted in its statement.

The Ministry also emphasized efficient resource utilization and closer collaboration with stakeholders to unlock the full potential of the coal sector. The initiative is in line with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Way Forward

The Ministry of Coal will continue regular performance reviews to monitor progress and resolve bottlenecks swiftly. Stakeholders have been urged to adhere to production schedules and maintain transparency in reporting.

With India’s energy demand on the rise, efficient coal block management is expected to play a pivotal role in securing a stable energy future.
