Welcoming the decision, Minister of Commerce and Industry Shri Piyush Goyal said that India’s selection demonstrates global confidence in the Modi government’s commitment to integrity and transparency in trade. He emphasized that India’s leadership will strengthen the Kimberley Process and reinforce its credibility as a multilateral framework.
The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), established in 2003 pursuant to a United Nations resolution, has become an effective mechanism to curb the trade in conflict diamonds. Today, the KP includes 60 participants, with the European Union and its Member States counted as a single participant. Together, they account for over 99 percent of the global rough diamond trade, making the KP the most comprehensive international system governing this sector.
India’s Role as a Diamond Hub
India is one of the world’s leading centers for diamond cutting, polishing, and trade. Its leadership in the Kimberley Process comes at a time when global markets are increasingly focused on sustainable and responsible sourcing. By assuming the chair, India is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of conflict-free diamond trade.
During its tenure, India will prioritize strengthening governance and compliance, advancing digital certification and traceability, enhancing transparency through data-driven monitoring, and building consumer trust in conflict-free diamonds. These measures are aimed at ensuring that the Kimberley Process remains relevant and effective in addressing evolving challenges.
Strengthening the Kimberley Process
As Vice Chair in 2025 and Chair in 2026, India will work closely with all participants and observers to reinforce confidence in the Kimberley Process. The focus will be on rule-based compliance, inclusivity, and credibility, aligning with the KP’s core objectives and global expectations.
India’s leadership is expected to bring renewed momentum to the Kimberley Process, particularly in areas such as digital innovation, transparency, and consumer awareness. By leveraging its expertise in diamond trade, India aims to ensure that the KP continues to serve as a robust safeguard against conflict diamonds.
