India to Conduct Nationwide Survey on Migration 2026–27

RR Team, February 2, 2026February 3, 2026
The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), has announced a comprehensive Survey on Migration scheduled between July 2026 and June 2027. This nationwide survey aims to capture detailed data on migration patterns, reasons for movement, seasonal trends, return migration, and employment profiles of migrants.
Migration surveys are conducted periodically by MoSPI, with the most recent data derived from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2020–21 and the Multiple Indicator Survey 2020–21. The upcoming survey seeks to provide a current and comprehensive understanding of both rural–urban and inter-state migration, enabling policymakers and researchers to plan more effective interventions in urban planning, housing, transportation, employment generation, social security, and skill development.

Key Migration Patterns in India

According to the PLFS 2020–21, India’s migration rate stood at 28.9%. The survey revealed significant gender differences: 10.7% of males and 47.9% of females had migrated. Female migration is predominantly driven by marriage, accounting for 86.8% of female migrants, while male migration is primarily motivated by employment opportunities, with 22.8% of male migrants moving for work.

These findings underline the distinct social and economic factors influencing migration in India. Understanding these patterns is critical for designing targeted policies that address the specific needs of male and female migrants.

Importance for Policymaking and Development

The forthcoming Survey on Migration will provide data essential for comprehending labor mobility, remittance flows, and seasonal workforce shifts. This will aid government agencies, urban planners, and social development organizations in making informed decisions. Comprehensive insights into migration trends are expected to enhance policies in areas such as skill development, employment generation, and social welfare, fostering inclusive growth.

Government Statement

This information was shared by the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Rao Inderjit Singh, in the Rajya Sabha. He emphasized that the survey will serve as a robust data source for stakeholders and facilitate evidence-based planning and development interventions across sectors..
