India to Host WHO Traditional Medicine Summit

RR Team, December 15, 2025December 16, 2025
New Delhi, December 15, 2025: India is set to emerge as the global hub for dialogue on holistic health as it hosts the Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine from December 17 to 19, 2025, in the national capital.
Jointly organised by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India, the summit will bring together policymakers, scientists, traditional medicine practitioners, Indigenous knowledge holders and civil society leaders from over 100 countries. The event aims to strengthen the role of Traditional Medicine within modern, people-centred health systems.

Theme: Restoring Balance in Health and Well-being

The summit will be held under the theme “Restoring balance: The science and practice of health and well-being.” At a time when global health systems face inequities, environmental stress and rising chronic diseases, the summit seeks to reaffirm the relevance of Traditional Medicine while grounding it firmly in science, evidence and ethical practice.

The New Delhi summit builds on the momentum of the inaugural WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in 2023, which placed traditional health systems firmly on the global health agenda.

Guided by WHO’s Global Strategy

Deliberations at the summit will be guided by the WHO Global Traditional Medicine Strategy 2025–2034. Discussions will focus on integrating Traditional Medicine safely and effectively into national health systems, supporting universal health coverage and promoting planetary well-being.

A high-level opening plenary will examine global imbalances in knowledge, access, governance and environmental health, and explore how restoring balance can shape resilient societies and sustainable health systems.

Science, Innovation and Policy Integration

The second day of the summit will place strong emphasis on science and innovation. Plenary sessions will highlight the importance of rigorous research, sustained financing, methodological harmonisation and global scientific collaboration to strengthen the evidence base for Traditional Medicine.

Another key discussion will focus on re-imagining health systems for balance, safety and resilience. Drawing on experiences from regions such as South-East Asia and the Western Pacific, experts will showcase how Traditional Medicine is being integrated into primary healthcare through supportive policies and regulatory frameworks.

Accountability, Data and Ethical Governance

The summit will also address accountability, standards and data systems. A dedicated plenary will explore the role of standardised data, transparent reporting and responsible use of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, in advancing Traditional Medicine.

Speakers will emphasise respect for ancestral knowledge, cultural integrity and Indigenous rights, while calling for ethical frameworks that ensure fair use of resources and community trust.

Global Participation and Expected Outcomes

Over three days, more than 170 expert speakers will participate in over 25 sessions, with 21 selected innovations showcased from across the world. The summit will be held in a hybrid format, enabling both in-person and virtual participation.

Key outcomes are expected to include new initiatives, collaborations and commitments aimed at strengthening global cooperation, policy environments and scientific foundations for Traditional Medicine.

India’s Leadership in Holistic Health

By hosting the summit, India reinforces its leadership in promoting holistic and integrative approaches to health rooted in its rich traditions such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Siddha and other systems. The summit aligns with India’s broader vision of sustainable development and inclusive global health.

As the world searches for equitable and sustainable health solutions, the Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine offers a timely platform to collectively reimagine the future of health and well-being.
