Indian Coast Guard to Host NATPOLREX-X and NOSDCP Meet

RR Team, October 5, 2025October 4, 2025
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is set to conduct the 10th edition of the National Level Pollution Response Exercise (NATPOLREX-X) alongside the 27th National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOSDCP) & Preparedness Meeting from October 5–6, 2025, off the coast of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This flagship event aims to evaluate and enhance India’s preparedness in tackling marine pollution incidents.

Wide Participation from National and International Stakeholders

The two-day exercise will witness active participation from central ministries, coastal state governments, major ports, oil handling agencies, and maritime organizations. The event will host over 100 national delegates and more than 40 foreign observers from 32 countries, reflecting India’s growing prominence in global marine environmental management.

Testing India’s Marine Pollution Response Capability

NATPOLREX-X serves as a biennial benchmark exercise to test the effectiveness of India’s inter-agency coordination under the NOSDCP framework. The drills will include the deployment of ICG ships and aircraft equipped for maritime pollution control, demonstrating multi-tiered operational response strategies. These simulations are designed to strengthen preparedness for real-world oil spill contingencies.

Focus on Sustainable Development and Ecological Responsibility

By showcasing operational expertise and fostering international collaboration, NATPOLREX-X 2025 highlights India’s commitment to marine environmental protection. The exercise reinforces sustainable maritime practices and encourages knowledge sharing among participating nations. Such initiatives play a key role in safeguarding coastal ecosystems while promoting responsible maritime development.

Enhancing Inter-Agency Coordination and Best Practices

The event emphasizes coordination among various national and international stakeholders, including ports, oil operators, and maritime agencies. Sharing best practices and reviewing technological integration will help India improve response efficiency and set benchmarks for global marine pollution management. NATPOLREX-X also provides a platform for testing innovations in spill containment, cleanup methods, and monitoring systems.

International Significance and Future Outlook

Participation from foreign observers underscores the strategic relevance of India’s pollution response capabilities. Insights gained from NATPOLREX-X and the NOSDCP meeting will inform future policy decisions, capacity building, and regional collaboration efforts. The Indian Coast Guard continues to strengthen its role as a leader in maritime environmental stewardship and preparedness.
